63.) Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel

When I first heard about this book months ago I immediately added it to my wish list and started counting down the days until its release date. It sounded right up my street- a fresh new take on vampires with it being about a 500 year old vampire queen being re-made as a 16 year old human girl, and after reading this the books biggest triumph is definitely the originality of it all but unfortunately for me that’s pretty much where it ends.

Lenah Beaudonte is a ruthless, murderess vampire queen to a coven of some of the most feared vampires in the world. Having been made into a vampire in 15th century England she is one of the oldest and strongest of her kind. Despite all of this Lenah isn’t happy. After being turned into a vampire by her lover Rhode at the young age of sixteen Lenah feels like she’d missed out on her chance to live life, so as Rhodes last act of love he performs an ancient ritual that allows her to reclaim the human life that he took away from her. Lenah must now live as a mortal in a boarding school in New England and try to stumble her way through modern technology, make friends and keep her past a secret. But when you’ve lived your days as an evil creature of the night it’s not so easy to put your past and your mistakes behind you, and when Lenah’s coven discovers that their queen is missing Lenah realises that her human days may be numbered…

I loved the idea of this story and when I first started it I found myself really enjoying it. It was interesting learning about Lenah’s past as a vampire queen and watching her try to fit in and appear normal amongst her peers but my problem started when this didn’t stop. For 300 pages there’s no real action and it reads very much like a YA realism book. Yes it’s all very interesting watching a vampire try to live as a human but after the first 100 pages it got very tedious and boring and by the time I was half way through I was debating putting it down. When I pick up a book about vampires I expect it to be action packed, and filled with blood and lust but Infinite days just didn’t read that way. The plot moved along very slowly making some parts boring to read. It wasn’t what I was expecting when I picked this book up so it left me very disappointed.

The second problem I had with this book were the characters. Be warned - if you find Zoey Redbirds boy problems irritating in The House of Night series you may not get along so well with Lenah Beaudonte. Like Zoey, Lenah has a string of 4 boys in this book that she has some sort of thing with who are all fighting for her love and to make things worse none of them were that great. There was very little character development which made the characters just ok for me. I didn’t love any of them in particular and so wasn’t really fussed who Lenah ended up with. The main relationship that Lenah does have happens very quickly over the period of a few weeks and when that’s done well in a book I don’t mind it but with Lenah and the guy in question I just wasn’t convinced they were the real deal.

So after suffering through 300 pages of the above I get to the last 100 pages and that’s when things start to improve considerably. We finally get some action and the ending almost makes it worth getting through the first 300 pages. I won’t say too much about that but it definitely sets things up for a potentially better sequel. During the last 100 pages Rebecca Maizel really shows us what she’s capable of and I just hope that now with everything set up in Infinite days she’ll continue on along that path with the sequel. Her writing is really beautiful and this definitely has the potential to be a great series if she’d just cut out a few of the guys and work on adding some action and suspense through out the book instead of saving it all for the end. Over all I have to say that I was disappointed with this book because I was looking forward to it for so long and it just wasn’t what I expected it to be. It was an ok read though not something to rush out and buy so for that reason I’m giving it 3.5 stars.

Note on the UK Cover:
I just wanted to leave a note about the UK edition of this book. The cover has an almost tracing paper like quality to it making it very easy to snag which happened to me - even though I’m a very careful reader - a few times leaving tiny tears in it. The model used also looks like she’s in her late twenties and doesn’t resemble a just turned 16 year old girl at all. After one very careful read of this book the covers crumpled and snagged, this book just isn’t very good quality at all. This is in no way Rebecca’s fault though which is why I didn’t want to include this in the actual review of the book but if your from the UK and are thinking about purchasing this book I’d advise you to try and hunt down the US copy – considering this is a hardcover it’s really not worth the money!

Stephen- Aww darn! I was positive that if the pink icing didn’t do it then the love hearts would. Now I’m going to have to put another batch on to cook! *throws pink frilly apron at Ape Man* seems you finished them off last time you can help me out right? ;)

Yeah it eventually turned out well enough- I’ve been reading a few reviews for it and a lot of people seem to feel the same way so I’m glad I’m not the only one with it being so highly anticipated!

I’m currently reading Zelah Green by Vanessa Curtis which is about a young girl who develops OCD and is sent to a care home for teens with mental illnesses after her mother dies. It’s both sad and funny at the same time it’s a very quick read and I’m enjoying it a lot so far. I can definitely relate to Zelah’s rituals with having OCD myself and I ordered the sequel off Amazon this morning :) Review for that should be coming soon I’m almost done…

I’m back with another book review!

64.) Zelah Green by Vanessa Curtis

I hadn’t heard very much about this book at all other than it kept coming up in my Amazon recommendations, so when I read a book bloggers review and found out that it was about a teenage girl with OCD I knew I just had to buy it and bought it prompt on my next trip to the book shop. I, like Zelah, suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder more commonly known as OCD which I developed in my teen years after going through a rough time. I know that there are a lot of books on depression out there for teens but I haven’t ever heard of one that’s based on OCD before. I think it’s great that Vanessa Curtis decided to write a book on this subject because unfortunately whether we like it or not mental illnesses are on the rise in today’s society and I find that books are a great comfort to those suffering with one. When you’re a teen with a mental illness – no scratch that – anybody with a mental illness a lot of the time people are too ignorant on the subject to see that it is an actual illness and are quick to just label the person as ‘weird’ and when you’re a teen life’s hard enough, add a mental illness on top of that and people avoiding the ‘freak’ it’s possibly one of the hardest times to have to deal with having a mental illness. So I salute Vanessa Curtis for writing this book – hopefully it will make anyone out there going through this feel less alone and help everybody else understand the illness a little better.

Zelah Green is a cleanaholic. She spends most of her life sticking to her harsh schedule also know as germ alert and dirt alert. This involves Zelah washing her hands up to 31 times, jumping on the stairs 128 times and having to touch everything with a tissue between her hand and the item. If Zelah doesn’t stick to her rituals or they go wrong she has to do them again to avoid having a panic attack and something bad happening to the people she loves. With her mother dead and her father gone Zelah’s left with her stepmother who can’t stand Zelah’s routines anymore so she ships Zelah off to Forest Hill House to get treatment for her OCD. There Zelah meets Alice the anorexic, Caro the cutter and Silent Sol who’s gorgeous but doesn’t speak to anyone. Zelah’s mortified to be at Forest Hill and worst of all having to live without her routines, but the teens soon become friends and with a little help from each other they help work through their problems and what follows is a heart-warming story that will have you laughing one minute and teary eyed the next.

This was a short sweet read that I read in two sittings. Zelah’s an endearing, hilarious character who you can’t help but want the best for. The book remains sweet and funny whilst at the same time deals with some serious issues. At no point did it ever feel heavy so I think that Vanessa Curtis got this just right for the teen reader. I immediately after finishing this bought the sequel Zelah Green: One More Little Problem and I can’t wait to read more of Zelah’s adventures and struggles with OCD. Recommended whether you want a funny, quick, quirky read or whether you want to learn more about teens with a mental illness from the view point of lovely awkward Zelah. This book has a nice balance between both making it a very good read indeed. 4 stars.

You both should definitely check it out, it was a good read.

I have another book review for you today for a very highly anticipated book of mine. I *finally* read City of Bones! Here are my thoughts…

65.) City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Well what can I say about this book that hasn’t already been said? I hopped on the wagon very late for this one which isn’t like me at all especially when you consider that I’ve had the complete Mortal Instruments series sitting on my shelf for the past year. Everyone has one of those series that they really want to read but for some reason or another never get around to and the Mortal Instruments series is mine. I think what finally pushed me to read City of Bones was all the hype around Cassandra Clare’s latest book Clockwork Angel which is a prequel to this series. I really want to read Clockwork Angel and although they don’t have to be read in order I did want to read The Mortal Instruments first just because I’m particular about things like that- I don’t want to miss anything and want to read them how there ment to be read. So I forced myself to sit down with City of Bones a few nights ago and after months of putting it off in favour of other books I wish I’d read it sooner…I loved it.

The story is set right in the heart of New York City which I loved. Most books that involve supernatural beings take place in the clichéd small quiet town but Cassandra Clare brings the story into a huge modern day city which made the book feel more real to me and more current. I loved the idea of vampires dancing in the hottest night clubs and faeries running around central park. It was very fresh and I loved the thought of sharing our world with these creatures in secret. Most YA books on the market tend to focus on one supernatural species but Clare gives the reader any supernatural creature they can think of werewolves? Sure, witches? you’ve got it. This makes the world were introduced to very layered and action packed with never a dull moment.

Before reading City of Bones I’d read a couple of reviews that said that they found the series badly written but I personally loved the writing style. It’s fresh, witty and modern and I found it a breeze to read. Cassandra Clare creates a quirky, funny dialog and the banter between the characters was great. You quickly come to love the characters and my favourite had to be Simon closely followed by Magnus (who I hope there’s more of in books to come!) and Jace. I have to admit that I found Clary a little annoying at the start because she was so slow to figure things out that I picked up on chapters ago but as she developed through the book I really began to like her towards the end.

The only fault I had with this book was the romance. I just didn’t feel it between Clary and Jace and would have liked to have felt a little more chemistry between them then again it is early days so I’m hoping things get more intense in books two and three. I personally love Simon myself but I think ultimately Clary belongs with Jace so I really hope their err “problems” that stop them from being together get resolved in the next books. Not saying too much on that as I don’t want to give away a great big stinkin’ spoiler! I’d of loved to have given this book 5 stars but I had to knock it down to 4.5 just because whilst the beginning of the book was good it wasn’t perfect for me. I didn’t think about it when I put it down, I didn’t want to read it every spare moment I had at least not until I was half way through when I really started to get into it. It’s one of those books that just get’s better and better and so I hope that over all this series does the same. If it does I can see it being up on my favourite section of my book shelf before long. Over all highly recommended and I’m very excited to read the next book in the series City of Ashes soon. 4.5 stars.

Jess, you're in for a treat! The next books do get better and you learn a whole lot about the rest of the 'worlds' the characters come from. I think with some of the other books you've read recently the third's ending will hit home. One of my fave series of late. Picked up Clockwork Angel a couple days ago, but I don't think I'll get to it until Thanksgiving break :'(

The series I just can't seem to start is Vampire Academy. . . I've had those forever. And seems as Night World (1-3 collection) might join, looks interesting just haven't found the 'right time' for either.

Ahhhh crap, another book for my wishlist! I'm not sure I'm going to be writing a review of Forbidden when I'm done, Jess - if I don't is it okay if I link to yours instead? You've already summed up what I'm feeling so far and I think it's amazing you managed to write about it! The novel is just so hard to read, those two young people trying to hold their family together even while they're falling apart themselves. Even without the romance thing it's just breaking my heart, knowing that there are children all over the place having to do this, raising their brothers and sisters and trying to keep their household under the authorities' radar in a desperate attempt keep everyone together. *sigh* I guess I'll go back to it now - I'm reading chunks at a time but then I have to put it down for a bit of recuperation and it feels somehow really hard to pick it up again, knowing things can never end happily. I'm over halfway through so we'll see how I get on!

I just got given the second book of the series today, Jess, so will be finding the first soon. For urban supernatural action, have you read Emma Bull, particularly The War of the Oaks or Elizabeth Bear's Promethean Age books?

Kate- Thanks Kate! I’m very excited to read them and learn more about the other worlds. That sucks about Clockwork Angel – take it your busy then? Clockwork Angel looks pretty huge! You should read Vampire Academy soon I think it’s my actual all time favourite series after Harry Potter. Trust me once you’ve read the first book you feel so empowered that you’ve finally read it it’s a great feeling not having a book hanging over your head!

Ellie- Yes add it to the wish list prompt it’s pretty awesome! I have to say that I feel really honoured that you want to link to my review because your own reviews are always so amazing which is why I’m going to urge you to write your own just because I love reading them :P but of course you can use my review if you wish :-) I can’t wait till you get to the end! The endings just amazing and I can’t wait to find out your reaction.

Ronincats – No I haven’t but I’ll be sure to check them out if you recommend them. I love finding out about new books to read so thank you!

I get to choose a new book to read today! I love that feeling of possibility, what will it be? What will it be?

mmyesss, mucho mucho busy with school and work and a couple activites. I could probably start it soon, but then I'd be reading in bits and pieces instead of straight through. . . which I definitely don't want to do with this one (well I could probably also do that, but then I don't think any homework would get done!). Vampire Academy may come winter break. . . or I'll goal for that.

I've had War for the Oaks a while now too. . . And I really should get to that one, since it's set near where I live.

Hrm... and Infinite Days sounded sooo interesting when I first heard about it... it sounds like it suffers from the Fallen syndrome: lots of wandering about and being a teenager, not enough action until the very end. I wonder if this is a tactic employed by the publisher, who decides that what should have been a standalone book would be more lucrative as a series.

26elliepotten
Sep 18, 2010, 4:11 pm

Finished it Jess - I actually bit my own knuckles a few times, hand my hand pressed over my mouth in horror for a fair while, and ended up having to go the bathroom to wash all the tears off my face and sort myself out. Jeeezus, it was good but I knew it wasn't going anywhere nice, y'know? I had an idea what might happen and who might be the downfall, but it still shattered me. I closed the book feeling like I needed a nap, I was exhausted! I'm going to TRY to write a review, after we go back to work probably since it's something productive to do on the counter! Maybe a couple of days to absorb it will make things easier.

That sound’s good Rach, email me any plans you have and I’ll get back to you :) I don’t think I’ll actually be re-reading any books for it because I have so many books to review for early October for publishers but I’ll definitely put together my two cents on whatever you want me to.

I know what you mean Kate, if I can only read a few pieces here and there sometimes I’d rather just wait until I can read properly and take it all in especially if it’s a book I know I’m gonna love! Please read Vampire Academy soon(ish) you’d be doing yourself a huge favour ;)

dk_phoenix- I was really excited for Infinite Days too it does sound like a really interesting book but for me it just wasn’t executed well. I actually loved Fallen funnily enough – I know a lot of people didn’t like it but I didn’t have a problem with it at all. But then again I do love books on angels so maybe that’s why?

Ellie- I have just signed in and read your review and I loved it! Very proud of you for biting the bullet with that one and I’m glad you “enjoyed” it. I’m going to go and give it my thumbs up in a mo! :)

Now I’m going to get to work on a review, I’m pretty tired for some reason so I don’t know how good it will be but we’ll soon find out! *yawns*

66.) Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles

People who know me will know that I love, love, love a good romantic story and when I read Simone Elkeles’ first book in this series Perfect Chemistry at the beginning of the year it quickly became one of my favourite books ever. I adore the Fuentes’ brothers so when I found out that Rules of Attraction would be about brother number two Carlos I was desperate to get it. It’s not out in the UK until next year and I of course couldn’t wait that long so I snatched up the US version but for some reason didn’t get around to reading it until last weekend. The airs starting to get that crisp autumn feel and I definitely needed me some Fuentes lovin’ to heat things up and this book didn’t let me down I loved it!

Let me start off by saying that I didn’t love this book quiet as much as Perfect Chemistry. I didn’t feel that Carlos and Kiara had as much up against them as Alex and Brittany so the plot wasn’t as intense but I thought that in it’s own right it’s a good book. I didn’t think I could love a male character as much as I loved Alex Fuentes but Carlos actually knocked him off the top spot! I loved Kiara but not quiet as much as I loved Brittany. Where Brittany’s kind, sweet and girly Kiara’s her opposite being a complete tomboy and she could definitely hold her own against Carlos. I was pleasantly surprised by how much Alex and Brittany were actually in Rules of Attraction it was so good to see how they were getting on two years later after Perfect Chemistry finished. When I started this book I was a little worried that this might just be Perfect Chemistry repeating itself but it definitely wasn’t. Whilst there are similarities a lot was different and Kiara and Carlos were definitely not another Alex and Brittany they had their own distinct personalities and their own problems to face. Simone Elkeles has a brilliant talent for really knowing her characters, their really well developed and they feel so real which I love about Simone’s writing. Even the secondary characters you can’t help but fall in love with and in Rules of Attraction I especially loved Kiara’s little brother and dad.

Where Simone Elkeles really excels is the romance. You can practically feel the heat between Kiara and Carlos radiating off the pages. The romantic, fiery, passionate banter between the couple leaves you in no doubt that their love and attraction to each other is strong. At one point when Carlos tells Kiara how much he loves her I found myself tearing up because it was just so real and convincing I could literally feel how Carlos felt and that is what makes this book so brilliant. It’s a die hard romance but not in a girly way at all. I’d definitely recommend this book for both genders as unlike a lot of romances I think it has a lot to offer everyone. It’s funny, fast paced, witty and sexy and I don’t think I’ve read a bad review for Perfect Chemistry or Rules of Attraction yet. Everyone will enjoy this book simply because Simone Elkeles is one of the best writers of YA realism fiction out there and if you don’t read her books you are seriously, seriously missing out. I can’t wait to read the last Fuentes brother Luis’s book Chain Reaction in 2011 and don’t know where I’m going to get my spicy Latino lovin’ until then. Highly, highly recommended to everyone. 4.5 stars.

Hey guy’s first of all I have some exciting news! Like Ellie I have recently just been picked up by random house publishing to be sent copies of books to review! I’m so excited because they publish some really amazing books. I’m super excited to get my first parcel of books from them soon! Speaking of books for review that is indeed what I’ll be doing today I got send a very very highly anticipated book of mine to review last week, I’m going to be recommending this to all of you because it’s so so amazing to find out more read on :)

67.) Angel by L.A.Weatherly

In a world where angels are beyond redemption, Alex thinks he's found one that might deserve mercy. Alex is a ruthless assassin - of angels. Forget everything you've heard about them before. Angels are not benign celestial creatures, but fierce stalkers whose irresistible force allows them to feed off humans, draining them of their vitality until there is barely anything left. As far as Alex is concerned, the only good angel is a dead angel...until he meets Willow. She may look like a normal teenager but Willow is no ordinary girl. Half-angel, half-human, Willow may hold the key to defeating the evil angels. But as the hunter and the hunted embark on an epic and dangerous journey and Willow learns the dark and terrifying secrets of her past, Alex finds himself drawn to Willow...with devastating consequences.

When Angel first landed on my door step a little over a week ago I’m pretty sure my shrieks of joy could be heard from the bottom of my street. To say I was excited is an understatement. I’ve been wanting to read this book ever since I first heard about it which was towards the beginning of the year and ever since then I’ve been counting down the weeks until it’s release date, so boy was I happy to receive this book a whole week before it hit the bookshops! Angels are my very favourite paranormal creature to read about, their my drug of choice and I buy and devour any books on angels I can find. These beings fascinate me and whilst I have read and loved pretty much every single angel book I’ve ever read Angel is by far the best book on these celestial beings on the young adult market. Angel is Usborne’s first book for teens and it solidly places a respected name amongst young adult books. This makes me very excited to see what else Usborne has for us readers in the future. Hold on to your halos fans of the paranormal because this book is going to be huge!

A popular theme on the Teen book market at the moment is taking something bad whether that be vampires, werewolves etc; and reinventing it as something good. L.A Weatherly turns the tables with Angel and turns something heavenly into something deadly. This makes Angel a very much needed breath of fresh air in the young adult market and what is going to set it apart from other books like it. On top of the original concept its fast paced providing constant entertainment right from the very first chapter. I was sucked into this world and didn’t want to come out of it so much so that I thought at times I might be suffering from “angel burn” myself! L.A Weatherly’s writing has a very nice smooth flow to it that kept the story moving along nicely making it incredibly hard to put down and when I managed on the rare occasion to tear myself away from this book it was still constantly on my mind.

Willow is an incredibly likeable character who has a very, sweet, kind personality. Unlike a lot of YA heroines she never once annoyed me. She’s the kind of person every girl wants as a best friend. Weatherly also gets it spot on with Alex who has just the right amount of vulnerability and bravery to him, making you want to look after him one minute and swoon over his kick ass-ness the next. Together they make a brilliant couple who you find yourself routing for throughout the book. As they fall in love with each other you fall in love with them more and more too. They develop and complete each other which makes their love feel very real to the reader.

Angel is the first book in the trilogy and I can already hardly wait for books two and three with the second book Angel Fire coming out June 2011. I can not begin to recommend this book enough, if you only read one young adult angel book make sure it’s Angel! 5 shiny halos.

Thanks go to Usborne for sending me this book to review. Angel will be available in all good bookshops October 1st 2010. Book description taken from goodreads.

I love your reviews Rachel! I'm looking forward to the Favs Fortnight to see what you come up with and what will be chosen as the elite few!

Jessica Louise, that book has not only gone onto my wishlist (as soon as it appeared on your IMM) but now it's had to be boosted right up near the top. Unfortunately since I now have piles in front of piles on my floor, it's probably time to slow down the book buying a teensy bit until I can read a few and get them onto those shop shelves! My TBR list (that's books actually sitting in my house, waiting to be read, not wishlisted books) topped 1000 this week, enough said...

Hey guys, Thanks for the congratulations! I’ve already received 3 AWESOME books from random house that I will add onto here when I do my In My Mailbox post on the blog Sunday. I’m finding it easier now that I’m getting books to review to just add all the books I’ve got that week on a Sunday, because I’m not on every day I’m likely to forget them where as when I’m doing my IMM they will all be out in front of me so it makes things easier so tune in for that!

You all need to get your hands on Angel if you can. I know a few people are having trouble getting their hands on it which makes me sad but no that if you do come across it it comes highly recommended by me :)

Rachel- your already great at reviewing you wouldn’t have over 200 followers on your blog if you weren’t you silly thing!

I’ve actually had some time to myself today and seem to have done nothing with it. I’m very tired but I’m going to attempt to do a review because I really want to get it done so all my September reading is up to date. This is a book that I got for review from Bloomsbury so if you enjoy it thumbs on here and comments on the blog would be very much appreciated :)

68.) No and Me by Delphine de Vigan

When I got this book through my letter box to review I hadn’t heard anything about it before but thought that it sounded good enough. Shortly after receiving it I started seeing it everywhere. In 3 for 2 offers in bookshops, being reviewed on blogs and just generally seeming to be read and enjoyed by everybody everywhere so I bumped it up on the TBR pile and picked it up when I fancied a quick read earlier on this week. The story starts when our heroine intelligent, quirky Lou has to do a presentation (which she loathes) in front of her class. Lou chooses to do her presentation on the homeless and introduces herself to No a teenage girl living on the streets. The pair start meeting so Lou can take notes on No’s thoughts on street life. Touched by No’s story, once Lou’s research is finished Lou finds that she can’t just turn her back on No and persuades her parents to let her stay with them even though their home life is far from perfect. Lou’s family is falling to pieces. Ever since her baby sister died her mothers been deeply depressed and hasn’t left the house in years whilst Lou’s father is struggling to hold their family together. With No living with the Bertignac’s her presence forces the family to come together and challenges their beliefs on friendship, family and the true meaning of home.

I found this book to be highly original. I’d never read or even heard of for that matter a book about homelessness before and it’s a real eye opener. No and Me made me consider things that I’d never really gave much thought to before and made me question the concept of home and family and what they truly mean. This book has a big message and plenty of lessons to be learned within its pages and some parts are so true and brilliant that they brought tears to my eyes on quiet a few occasions. There’s nothing else quiet like No and Me out there for teens at the moment and I think it would be a really good book for them to read. This certainly isn’t a book just for teens though. In fact there’s both a young adult and adult version on the market and I can really see why. No and Me has something to offer everyone and is the perfect book for book clubs or families to share. Like the story itself it will bring people together.

I loved the characters of Lou and Lucas, they felt very real and developed to me especially as they both try to fix No because they can’t fix their own situations at home. No sparked some mixed emotions in me sometimes I wanted to hug her and look after her and other times I wanted to shake some sense into her. I didn’t agree with a lot of her actions but I could understand why she did them. I really loved seeing how each character grew through out the book especially Lou who’s intelligent yet naive a lot of teens will relate to her and I think she’s a YA heroine to look up to.

Above all what made this book for me was the writing. Delphine de Vigan has a wonderful voice. Sometimes with books that are translated the writing can feel a little unnatural at times but No and Me sailed along beautifully. The writing feels almost poetic at times it really is wonderful - one of the most well written books that I’ve read all year. The only fault I had with this book was that I would of liked a bit more of a story just to give it that un put down able edge that I feel it lacked a little bit. That a side though I can appreciate it for what it is. I can see why this books doing so well at the moment and I warmly recommend it. Buy it, read it and pass it around to your family and friends. Lend it to your mums or children because it’s guaranteed to bring families together and warm your hearts. 4 stars.

Hehe I am silly y'know!

Good to know that No and Me is definitely worth a read - if I was sensible (and overwhelming past experience says I'm not) I would try and buy the original french edition and read it either before or alongside the translated version to see how I fared. Who knows maybe I'll surprise myself :P

69.) Torment by Lauren Kate

When I first heard the description and saw the cover for the first book in this series Fallen last year it was love at first sight. I read and devoured it earlier this year and have been positively pining for Torment ever since. So when it arrived in the post last week I bumped it up on my To be read pile and read it as soon as I could. Because I adored Fallen so much I had only the highest expectations for Torment, it’s definitely been one of the most highly anticipated books for me this year. The covers for this series are beautiful – quiet literally art they captivate you and draw you in and what’s inside is just as wonderful. After reading Torment I can definitely say that the Fallen series is definitely a favourite for me.

I found Torment to be a very different book compared to Fallen. In Torment you get to learn a lot more about the shadows that have haunted Luce her entire life and find that they play a significant part in Luce finding out about her past lives. Torment starts when Luce and Daniel are forced apart when Luce has to attend Shoreline a school for Nephilim - part angel part human offspring who tend to inherit some sort of angel power and characteristics – to keep Luce safe and protected from the immortals that wish to kill her. Without Daniel around to answer Luce’s questions Luce searches for answers of her own by summoning the shadows that allow her to see into her past lives even though to do so can be highly dangerous. Some of the things Luce discovers doesn’t sit well with her and she begins to wonder if Daniel’s version of the past is the truth, or is she really meant to be with someone else?

You learn so much more in this book about the world that Lauren Kate’s created Angels, Demons, Nephilim and Luce’s past lives definitely get more attention in Torment. Lauren’s a master at giving you just enough information so that you can understand what’s going on and leaves just enough for you to be kept in suspense making you keep reading and reading to find out some answers. I was just as desperate as Luce to find out the secrets of her past and found myself reading late into the night, time practically flying by because I was so engrossed in this book.

The only thing that let me down was Luce and Daniel’s relationship with each other in Torment. Torment definitely isn’t as romantic as Fallen because Daniel and Luce have many ups and downs which resulted in them both getting on my nerves a little bit. However it has to be said that the secondary characters more than make up for that. We get to see all of our old favourite characters from Fallen make a grand return and are even introduced to some awesome new characters like Luce’s new roommate at Shoreline Shelby who was my personal favourite character and Miles a guy who comes drama free something Luce desperately needs during her torment. The secondary characters in the Fallen series are some of my favourite ever and I hope we get to see both old and new feature in future books.

Torment definitely has a more suspenseful, layered feel to that of Fallen with less kissing and undying love and more action and answers. I personally loved that side to the story and think that we needed that back seat to the romance so that Luce can make her own mind up about a few things instead of taking Daniel’s word as gospel. I’ve spent the last few days addicted to Torment and would definitely recommend it to fans of Fallen and even to those who didn’t enjoy the first book all that much simply because this book is a lot different to Fallen. I’m hugely excited for the third book in this series Passion which comes out summer 2011. Highly recommended 4.5 stars.

After reading all the rave reviews I wanted to read Forbidden right away, so I was really annoyed to see that it's apparently not yet available in paper format in the US. I even tried to order it from Book Depository but apparently they're too smart for that.

Also, I'm a bit behind but I wanted to add that I also put off reading City of Bones but was finally convinced because Clockwork Angel sounded so interesting. Except I still haven't read the book yet, but at least I've gotten as far as taking it out from the library. Maybe in the next month or so I'll actually read it.

No and Me sounds interesting too.

Now I’m going to do a review for you all on my most recent read Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly. I loved this book so, so much. I know I just won’t do it justice. I think it’s my new favourite read of the year and I strongly urge you all to read it. Anyway I’m going to try and do my best…here it goes!

70.) Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly

Revolution is the highly anticipated second novel for young adults by Jennifer Donnelly. I read and adored Jennifer’s first novel A Gathering Light when it very first came out at the young age of 14 now 6 years later after a long, painful wait I got the chance to read and review Revolution early much to my delight!

At the beginning of Revolution we’re introduced to cool, incredibly talented Andi a teenage girl living in present day New York. Andi goes to a prestigious private school for talented students and Andi’s talent is music. It would seem that Andi has the world at her feet with endless opportunities available to her, it seems like she has it all, and she did but that was before her younger brother Truman died in an accident that Andi believes is her fault. Since Truman’s death Andi’s family has been slowly falling apart with her mother going insane and her father leaving the family for a younger woman who’s pregnant with his child. Drowning in guilt and depression Andi turns to her music to express the thoughts and feelings she cannot say. Andi loses all interest in anything else but her music and risks flunking out of school because of it. Her father - oblivious as to what’s going on in his old life - doesn’t realise anything’s wrong until he gets a call from Andi’s school saying that if she fails her thesis she won’t graduate. With her mother in a mental health unit and her father flying out to France to work on the mystery of the Lost Dauphin Louis-Charles, Andi has no choice but to go with him. It’s in Paris that Andi stumbles upon a lost diary belonging to a girl of her age Alex who worked in the palace looking after Louis-Charles during the French revolution. Captivated by Alex’s story and confessions instead of turning the diary in Andi reads on intrigued by the similarities between herself and Alex, Louis-Charles and her brother Truman, and what follows is a page turning historical mystery merging both girls’ fates together.

When I started this book I thought it was good but not brilliant. It took a while for the story to really get going for me. It wasn’t slow exactly but it just took a good chunk of the book for Jennifer Donnelly to set the story up. However when you get further into the story you see that the book needed that set up so if you’re struggling with it I urge you to continue reading because it really is vital to the story and when Andi goes to Paris that’s when the book really starts to get going. It was from that point on that I simply could not put this book down. I think that I expected the historical part of the book to start straight away and the first 50 or so pages read very much like a contemporary young adult novel rather than historical fiction so I think that’s why I didn’t enjoy it as much as the rest of the book. If you expect that from the beginning though then I don’t think you’ll have a problem.

I don’t think main character Andi’s the most likeable character out there but she definitely grew on me as I carried on reading. She may not be kind and perfect but she’s real and that’s why I liked her. She loves, she hates, she’s definitely one of the most realistic characters out there for young adults at the moment and I loved her passion for music. Throughout the book you get to read little snippets of Andi’s favourite songs and her own music and they really give a gateway into how Andi’s feeling. Jennifer Donnelly’s characters all have so many layers to them both good and bad. They have depth. Their human, and because of that Revolution felt very real to me like this was really happening which I think is an aspect you really need when re-telling a part of history.

As with Jennifer’s first novel A Gathering Light, Revolution is flawlessly written. You can tell that Jennifer’s a born storyteller and a beautiful writer – you so easily get wrapped up in her words. I lost track of time on so many occasions because I was so engrossed in this book. It’s powerful, beautiful, mesmerising and fascinating. I went into this book not knowing that much about the French revolution and I admit that I was a little wary that I wouldn’t enjoy it or understand what was going on but I was so wrong. You don’t have to go into this book knowing all of the facts because it explains everything you need to know along the way without it reading like a history text book - in fact quite the contrary. I was so fascinated by the French revolution Jennifer tells its story so well and I’m going to definitely be looking out for more books on the subject in the future.

This book made me feel so many things; the book itself is so many things. It’s love and grief, life and death, good and bad and I became so emotionally attached to it that I lost count of how many times I got teary eyed whilst reading. Sometimes because I was sad sometimes because I was happy sometimes because of the sheer beauty of Jennifer Donnelly’s writing. You definitely get taken on a journey whilst reading Revolution. Jennifer really brings the French revolution to life. Not only did it feel like I could see and smell everything that was going on around me but I could feel what the characters were going through I could feel their pain and their bloodlust their need for revenge and change. This book has everything love, passion, hate and lessons that are just as current now as they were during the revolution. There are so many important things that this book has to say. It will change the way you think and feel without even trying to. Revolution is the kind of book that will be read and loved by everybody because it has so many things to offer but above all Revolution is a story about doing the right thing, the good thing, forgiveness and moving on. It’s about the revolution that we all have inside ourselves over some thing or another. The revolution that’s still going on. After finishing this book yesterday afternoon I’m still thinking about it, it’s still all going through my mind. It’s haunting like the ghost of the revolution itself. Revolution is one of the best books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading and I think it’s my favourite book that I’ve read so far in 2010, it’s definitely been worth the wait for all these years! Start reading this with the highest of expectations and you still won’t be disappointed - not one bit. Highly, highly recommended to everyone. 5 stars.

Thanks go to Bloomsbury for sending me this book for review. Revolution is out NOW in all good bookshops across the UK and US.

71.) Sugar and Spice by Lauren Conrad

Sugar and Spice is the last instalment in the L.A Candy series. These books have been my sweet little guilty pleasures this year and although they may not be the best pieces of literature they keep me entertained which for me is the main thing.

The L.A Candy series follows a year in the life of a group of young, L.A girls who have launched to fame through a hit reality TV show. These books are semi autobiography, semi fiction based on author Lauren Conrad’s time on MTVs hugely successful reality series The Hills. In Sugar and Spice things pick up where Sweet Little Lies left off. After recently being betrayed by supposed friend and co-star Madison, Jane’s fast learning who she can and can’t trust now that she’s living under the spotlight. Whilst the tabloids are trying to create a rivalry between the girls all Jane wants is to cut her frenemies out and take back control of her life and normality, but normal is hard to achieve when you’re the nations sweetheart and your ex-boyfriend from back home comes creeping out of the works. Add on top of that Jane’s current L.A crush Brandon and life proves to be just as dramatic off screen as it is on. Meanwhile Jane’s best friend Scarlett is having some boy troubles of her own. Her new boyfriend Liam is the guy of her dreams, sweet, kind and down to earth Liam has no interest in appearing on L.A candy – which would be perfect if the bosses of the show didn’t keep trying to set up flirtatious scenes between Scarlett and guys who are willing to appear on the show causing Scarlett’s real reality to come crashing down. As season 2 gets ready to air it looks like the girls have some big decisions to make about their lives on and off set but can both reality and reality TV ever co-exist smoothly alongside each other?

What I love about the L.A candy books is that there’s never a dull moment. There’s always plenty of drama and backstabbing to keep you turning those pages and the characters of Jane and Scarlett are really admirable. If you haven’t read these books you may be lead to believe that it’s about blonde, ditzy, wannabes chasing fame in L.A and whilst there are some characters like that in the books the main characters Jane and Scarlett are nothing like that with Jane being a down to earth girl next door type and Scarlett an intelligent, ambitious, natural beauty. These girls are real and very relatable and likeable and it’s so entertaining seeing the girls trying to deal with being big stars in L.A and all the fakes and drama that comes along with it.

On top of everything this series gives a very insightful look into reality TV and what really goes on behind the scenes in these shows told by a girl who’s experienced it all first hand. I’ve enjoyed these books a lot, there perfect light hearted escapism on days when I just wanted something fun to read. I thought Sugar and Spice was a great ending to a great series overall but I was a little disappointed by Jane’s love interest outcome especially because I liked a certain guy in particular but other than that I thought it was a perfect ending.

Scandalous, dramatic and highly entertaining this is the perfect series to get lost in. The literary equivalent to a hot bubble bath and a glass of wine. Sugar and Spice will be loved by The Hills fans, reality TV show junkies and teenage girls everywhere. 3.5 stars.

72.) The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

Violet Ambrose has been able to sense echoes for as long as she can remember. Whether they take the form of a smell, taste, sound or vision Violet is the only person who can feel them which can be seriously creepy with echoes being a signal for a dead body being around, and not just any dead body, the dead whose lives have been stolen from them. If that wasn’t bad enough Violet can also tell when somebody has killed as the echo leaves the same imprint on the murderer. In the past this has mainly just lead Violet to find dead birds and rodents left by her cat but when young girls bodies start being discovered close to Violets town Violet is drawn to find them. As the murders start getting closer and closer to home Violet knows that she has to do something. She can’t just sit there and let her gift go to waste even if best friend Jay doesn’t like it Violet knows she has no choice and sets off on a mission to take down the killer with or without Jay’s help, even though by doing so not only is she risking everything with Jay she is also risking her life…

What I loved most about The Body Finder was the romance. Jay and Violet have been best friends since childhood so you don’t watch a love develop because it’s all already there straight off the bat. There were no ifs and maybes if they’d get together it was inevitable because straight away you’re hit with how badly these two are meant to be together. I had an instant couples crush on them. Violet and Jay are for me one of the sweetest most realistic couples in YA fiction. There was no stupid love triangle it was just Violet and Jay from beginning to end them against the world which I loved.

As individual characters I adored both Jay and Violet from the start and now have the hugest book boy crush on Jay. He’s the sweetest guy, and what’s weird about that is that in books I usually only like the bad boys but Jay was just such a sweet heart that I couldn’t help swooning over him. I also loved Violet most heroines tend to annoy me because they make stupid choices or are too whiny and dependant on their guy but Violet was none of those things she was a really great girl who I would love to be friends with and whilst I loved them both individually they positively shone as a couple because they bring out the best in each other.

As well as a brilliant romance this book has a seriously incredible plot. The story’s so fast paced constantly leaving you in suspense and is completely original to anything else out there at the moment. Kimberly Derting’s a brilliant writer one minute making you feel safe and warm in Jay and Violets little bubble and the next putting you in the mind of a seriously sadistic killer. The alternate chapters were flawlessly written and I loved being jolted out of my comfort zone when the plot would change direction keeping me on the edge of my seat. It was the perfect book to read this time of year being so close to Halloween.

This book for me was completely unputdownable. Packed with suspense I just wanted to keep reading and reading to find out what was going to happen next not just with the killer but also with Jay and Violet. Creepy and intense when you finish this book you’ll be positively dying for the next instalment Desires of the Dead. Highly recommended, 4.5 stars.

You really do. The alternate chapters with the killer are seriously disturbing and creepy especially because he only likes to kill young, pretty girls *shudders* and then you have Jay in all the others and you feel all warm and swoony and then it changes and it’s like someone’s tipped ice down your back! Great reading! I need to buy my own copy when its out.

Now I’m going to crack on with my latest review for Random House considering the book in question is out today!

73.) Boys Don't Cry by Malorie Blackman
Its A Level results day for Dante, a bright future at university and then a career as a journalist await him but then his ex-girlfriend Mel turns up on his doorstep holding a baby and his whole world turns upside down. Mel claims that baby Emma is his and asks Dante to mind her while she nips to the shops to get her a few things. Dante’s left reluctantly keeping an eye on Emma so Mel can get what she needs and come back and tell him what the hell’s going on, but when hours pass and Mel still hasn’t shown up Dante’s future suddenly looks less sparkling and more nappy filled…

When I first heard about Boys Don’t cry many months ago now I knew I just had to read it. Teen parenting is a topic that I’ve read a fair few books on but never have I even heard of a book told from the father’s point of view never mind a mother who has abandoned her child leaving the dad holding the baby. I feel like teen dads get a lot of slack from society for “getting the girl pregnant” not wearing protection and for them then running away and not taking responsibility for their child but that’s not always the case. I also feel like there’s a stereotype for teen fathers as being dossers living off benefits not working or supporting their kids without any real thought for how hard that would be for a young man with no qualifications. Not because he doesn’t work hard, but because he’s unable to get a job or study because he has a child to look after, to try and do right by, and sometimes as with Dante’s case a lot of young fathers have to bring up a child alone.

The idea for this book is genius and gives readers a chance to experience what it’s like being a teen dad in today’s society- a society that’s quick to judge. Running alongside the main story is the subject of homosexuality and homophobia. In Dante’s younger brother Adam’s alternate chapters he experiences severe homophobic bullying. Both brothers stories join together to create a book about what it truly takes to be a real man hence the title Boys Don’t Cry.

I loved both Dante and Adam as characters and related to them a lot despite being a 20 year old girl. I think this is book both sexes can enjoy and for that reason predict it to be insanely popular. Both boys may be in their teens but they handle their situations with maturity earning them both my utter most respect and making them hugely likable.

This was my first book by Malorie Blackman and I’m definitely interested in reading some more of her work. This is the kind of book I would recommend to everybody. Teens, adults, male, female readers will all enjoy this book it really gets you thinking about fatherhood, homophobia, teen parenting and how society behaves towards them. But ultimately? This is a book about family, male relationships, and what it really takes to truly be a man. 4 stars.

Ellie & Rach- Okay let me know if you hear any news! Rach I’ll send it to you as soon as I manage to get my hands on some more envelopes being ill I haven’t yet had chance – will let you know when it’s on its way!

Hi guys, it feels like I haven’t been online forever although I don’t think it’s been that long. I’ve been really poorly with a nasty cold that soon turned into a chest infection and I haven’t been doing much at all other than sleeping with the occasional film or few chapters of a book squeezed in her and there. I’m still not 100 per cent but I’m feeling well enough to string a review together now so let’s get on to it!

74.) Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

So let me start off by saying I was a little reluctant about picking up Crescendo when my blog followers voted for this to be my Halloween read. Firstly because although I loved the plot for the first book in this series Hush Hush I really didn’t like the characters very much. Secondly a lot of people reviewing Crescendo were saying that they found Patch and Nora very annoying in this book and this was coming from people who loved them in Hush Hush so needless to say that really put me off reading it. I was convinced I’d hate it. But my followers wanted me to read and review it for them so not wanting to let them down I settled down with it on Saturday night and overall I loved it.

However the same things that I didn’t like about Hush, Hush annoyed me in Crescendo. That being Patch and Nora’s characters. In Crescendo the couple have a lot of ups and downs. Sometimes I liked them and could understand their decisions, other times they infuriated me so much and I hate to say it but I’m still not a Patch fan. I know that a lot of girls love Patch but I just don’t. He’s a very closed off, secretive character and for that reason I don’t feel like I really know him, giving me nothing to like, and because he’s so guarded I don’t trust him one hundred per cent and I don’t feel his love for Nora. As for Nora she’s just one of those characters that lets us girls down. She’s very needy and risks her life by putting herself in stupid situations to see if Patch still cares enough to save her. I like my lead female characters strong and Nora’s just not my kind of heroine at all. I do however LOVE Nora’s best friend Vee, she’s such a good friend to Nora and I love her wit. The characters are for me the only thing that lets this series down. If they were a bit more likeable I would be in book heaven because the plot is just brilliant.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love books on Angels their my very favourite paranormal creatures and the plot for this series is fantastic. In Crescendo the plot definitely thickens and I’m so excited to see where Becca is taking this series. A lot gets revealed in the duration of Crescendo there’s so much suspense and so many twists and turns that make this book un-put-down-able. I was surprised and riveted and found myself on a few occasions thinking “oh, just one more chapter!” that one chapter turning into two or three.

Becca Fitzpatrick is a brilliant story teller. Her books are action packed and I love her style of writing. As I said at the beginning of this review I had my reservations about picking this one up but overall I’m very glad that I did. It’s not perfect but the plot more than makes up for it, making it a must read to find out more about this world. The twists are just amazing, well thought out and shocking. If you - like myself - are having problems with Patch and Nora whether you’re reading Crescendo or didn’t like them in Hush Hush it’s definitely worth getting past that because everything else about this book is brilliant. Be warned if you’re not a fan off cliff-hanger endings though because this book ends on a HUGE one! How could you do this to us Becca? It does the trick though, because I simply can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series. Recommended if you’re looking for a fast paced, paranormal read. 4.5 stars.

Today I come with a very exciting post! I have completed my 75 book challenge! Woo hoo! I’m going to carry on with this thread and see how many I can get read by the end of the year.

Anyway here’s my review for the big 75 and it was a good one! :-)

75.) Jemima J by Jane Green

Jemima Jones is overweight. Very overweight and she can’t help but feel that her life needs a drastic change because when the going gets tough Jemima eats for comfort whether that’s because she’s yet again being treated like a slave by her bitchy gorgeous flatmates or because she’s stuck working on the Top Tips column at the Kilburn Herald when what Jemima really wants to do is write for a glossy fashion magazine or because Ben - office hunk, and good friend - will never see her as more than just that, a friend. Jemima begins to wonder if people would treat her differently if she were to lose the weight but can Jemima reinvent herself and land the life of her dreams? And more importantly should she have to change the way she looks to get the life she wants?

Jemima J is the ultimate makeover novel that will appeal to women everywhere. The reader is put in Jemima’s shoes, the shoes of a larger than life lady trying to make a career for herself in fashion capitol London. Jemima shows us the prejudice and assumptions that come along with her size. Although Jemima’s story is ultimately funny and light it also packs a punch about image and body confidence. Jemima J is an honest, touching, hilarious story that every girl who has ever been body conscious will relate to, nodding along with Jemima thinking “she’s just like me!”

Jemima is one of the loveliest, funniest heroines I’ve ever had the pleasure to read about. This girl has a heart of gold and I so badly wanted things to work out for her. You also can’t help but fall in love with Ben just as deeply as Jemima has. He’s intelligent, sweet, sexy and charming the perfect romantic hero. I also found myself really liking Geraldine Jemima’s friend from work who grows on you more and more as you read the book. She really proves herself to be a brilliant friend to Jemima when she needs her most. The characters are very warm and likeable making them an absolute joy to read about.

I’ve read a few of Jane Green’s books and seem to prefer her earlier books to her newer ones. They have a much younger, funnier feel to them and this is probably my favourite of hers to date. Jemima J is chick-lit gold and is now a firm favourite of mine in the genre. This is a totally feel good book which mixes low self-esteem, addiction, wit, fate, love and friendship together creating a comforting compulsively readable book. Perfect to snuggle up with on one of those ugly duckling days it will boost your mood and your confidence. I’d recommend this book to anyone who’s ever looked in the mirror and has been less than happy with what they see. 4.5 stars.

Now for another review!

76.) Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -the deliria- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments’ demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy. But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

I’m a huge fan of Lauren Oliver’s debut novel Before I Fall and so was excited when my blogger friend gave me her ARC to read and review early. Having loved Lauren’s first book along with the amazing sounding synopsis I started Delirium with only the highest expectations and overall, I loved it, although I did have a few problems with it.

I noticed a few- not plot holes as such- but a few things that didn’t add up whilst reading that I won’t go into as I don’t want to spoil this book at all. Not huge things, but just little things that niggled at me and didn’t ring true. I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t even notice them they were that small but I did and I couldn’t help but being irritated by them. On top of that when I picked this book up I expected it to be very faced past, with none stop action, end of the world type stuff like other books that I’ve read in the dystopian genre but this book wasn’t like that at all. It isn’t slow exactly it just wasn’t action packed and because I’ve come to expect that from dystopian themed books I couldn’t help but be disappointed. This is in no way the book or authors fault, I just built it up in my head to be something very different.

When I got past all of that and was half way into it I started to see the book for what it was – an epic love story. It was then that I fell in love with Delirium. Although I found main character Lena slightly annoying at the beginning I really began to like her when she met Alex and her opinions on Amor Deliria Nervosa started to change. And what can I say about Alex? I ADORED him. But which girl wouldn’t? He’s such a lovely guy and he recites poetry for gosh sakes! He’s definitely a new book boy crush of mine and I’m sure other female readers will fall in love with him too. One character who I loved throughout was Lena’s best friend Hana. I loved Hana so much she’s such a brilliant friend to Lena and I really hope that we get to see more from her in the rest of the books.

Lauren Oliver sure knows how to writer her romance, when Lena and Alex were together they positively shone and the forbidden love aspect to it made their love feel even more convincing and tragic. I loved them as a couple and was desperate for them to find a way to be together. Lauren’s writing is hugely powerful throughout. She has such a beautiful way with words that really makes you feel what the characters are going through- resulting in lots of crying from me from start to finish! I also loved the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter it gave the book a really nice touch with a little bit of an idea of what our characters will be going through in this chapter.

What really made this book for me though was the ending, oh the ending! Delirium has one of the most intense, heart wrenching endings I have ever read. I wouldn’t have put it down if you paid me. I simply could not stop reading (other than when I had to quickly run and grab another tissue to wipe away my tears!) and when I closed this book I’m not ashamed to say I broke down into huge baby, red faced, puffy eyed, snotty tears and stayed that way for half hour re-reading certain parts and taking the book in. I loved this book so much that it actually pains me not to be able to give it the full 5 stars but because of the reasons I gave at the beginning of this review I just can’t. It’s not that I built it up in my head to be better not at all just different so of course I was disappointed when it wasn’t what I thought it would be which is why I wanted to make my reasons clear in this review so you guys now hopefully won’t feel the same way as me when you come to read it. Please don’t let these reasons put you off reading this book because it truly is brilliant. Pick it up expecting an epic love story instead of action packed, end of the world stuff and you will not be disappointed –promise. I cannot wait for the next instalment in this fantastic new trilogy Pandemonium. Highly recommend even with the problems I had with it. I could over look them, I hope you will too. 4.5 stars.

Good review! If you think most dystopias are super action-packed (which I will be blaming the recent-ish YA explosion of them), you should read some older 'classic' ones--several only have a couple action-y scenes in the whole book. One of my faves is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. One with a little more action but still lots of pondering is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Of course, they had action ones too. . . Ender's Game lovelovelovelove :D

Hi guys,

I just wanted to pop in to do an update seems as I haven’t been on LT properly for weeks. I’ve been having computer trouble and even though the PC’s back with me now it’s still being a pain and turning itself off and on so my internet time has been limited and obviously my blog is my first priority. However now the computer *is* back I’m slowly getting things back to normal. I’ve read and reviewed a few books and all the recent reviews can be found on my LT page. I’ve still got a couple to catch up on so if things are going ok I’ll try to start posting them on here again. In the meantime I hope you’re all enjoying the festivities and getting lots of reading done! And just to let you know I WILL be doing this challenge again in 2011 and by then hopefully things will be back to normal for me :) until next time!..x

80.) Twelve days of Christmas by Trisha Ashley

"Christmas has always been a sad time for young widow Holly Brown, so when she's asked to look after a remote house on the Lancashire moors, the opportunity to hide herself away is irresistible – the perfect excuse to forget about the festivities.

Sculptor, Jude Martland, is determined that this year there will be no Christmas after his brother runs off with his fiancée and he is keen to avoid the family home. However, he will have to return by the twelfth night of the festivities, when the hamlet of Little Mumming hold their historic festivities and all of his family are required to attend.

Meanwhile, Holly is finding that if she wants to avoid Christmas, she has come to the wrong place. When Jude unexpectedly returns on Christmas Eve he is far from delighted to discover that Holly seems to be holding the very family party he had hoped to avoid.

Suddenly, the blizzards come out of nowhere and the whole village is snowed in. With no escape, Holly and Jude get much more than they bargained for – it looks like the twelve days of Christmas are going to be very interesting indeed!"

What first attracted me to Twelve Days of Christmas was that it sounded very much like one of my all-time favourite Christmas films “The Holiday” with it being about house sitting over Christmas time so I was very excited to start reading this when the snow started to fall and I was really getting into that Christmas Spirit, and well, I guess I’m just going to come out and say it. I didn’t like this book.

The story centres around 35 year old Holly Brown and the main problem I had with this book is that I didn’t get on with Holly- not because she was annoying or nasty or anything like that she was nice enough but she was also incredibly boring and dull. I just didn’t have anything in common with her and couldn’t warm towards her. It was a bit like meeting somebody at a party who seems like a nice enough person but you’d never actually be friends with them because you don’t have anything in common. Holly spends 400 odd pages either cooking, looking after the animals or “thawing off” a HUGELY over used phrase in this book, which is all fine and well if that wasn’t all that she done in excessive detail. I like food and animals as much as the next person but I really don’t need a running commentary especially when it came to the cooking. Holly spends 80 per cent of her time cooking and not being a keen cook myself I found a huge chunk of this book very tiresome. Holly was for me a rather boring character who I just try as I might couldn’t connect with.

I also really didn’t enjoy Trisha Ashley’s writing style. It struck me as rather old fashioned and everyone was rather sensible and proper even nearly a teen Jess who really didn’t act like a modern day teenager and behaved more like her gran!

That being said this book wasn’t all bad. Some aspects of the plot kept me interested and I rather liked some of the secondary characters. Twelve days of Christmas is one of those books with a great story idea but it just isn’t executed well. I did wonder at some points if it would be better suited to older readers, with a lot of the main characters being either middle aged or elderly and with the Old fashioned style of writing, but for me as a 20 year old who likes her chick lit funny, fashionable and sexy this book was a bit of a let-down. Although I personally didn’t enjoy it I would recommend it to people fond of their cooking or maybe to a slightly older audience than myself. But as a warming fun read for Christmas? I’d give this one a miss. My first Trisha Ashley book and unfortunately I think this will also be my last. 2 stars.

Yeah, me too... I thought it sounded a bit like 'The Holiday' too when I read the synopsis online - it even has a character called Jude! - but I'm glad I didn't bother now! I'll be following your blog recommendation and reading The Gift before Christmas instead. :-)

P.S. Did you get my email reply? I had to send it twice before it appeared in my sent box but it SAID it had gone... Rach didn't seem to have gotten hers so I thought I'd better check!

Hello Ape man! Long-time no speak. I trust your well and are in a lovely bookish Christmassy mood?

Stasia- Yes I would recommend skipping that one! I wish I did!

Ellie- My mums reading The Gift right now on my recommendation and loving it :) It’s a lovely Christmas read so I hope you give it a go! Yep I got your email- don’t worry it sent!

Hello all, well Christmas is nearly upon us! I hope you’re all prepared. I’m going to be reading Dash and Lilys Book of Dares for my Christmas read. My brother gave it to me as an early Christmas present because he knows I love reading Christmas books a little bit before the big day to get me in the mood! I’m not going to be posting anymore reviews on this thread because I just don’t have the time to update it along with my blog but I will still be calling in like I am now and if any of you are interested I’m still going to be posting reviews on my LT page. I’m going to aim to get my 2011 thread set up sometime next week- which reminds me can somebody post me the link so I can find it? If I don’t speak to you all again before Christmas I hope you all have a wonderfully bookish Christmas and get plenty of relaxing and reading done :-)
