- The Vatican Library or Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana, is the library of the Holy See. It is located located in Vatican City. It is one of the oldest libraries in the world and contains an unsurpassed collection of books, manuscripts and historical documents. Formally established in 1475, it contains over 75,000 codices spanning over 2,000 years of history. This library also houses the Vatican Secret Archives. The archives contain the state papers, correspondence, papal account books, and many other documents.
The Vatican Library is a research library and mainly open to credentialed scholars.
