Children will delight in Marcus Pfister’s adorable ‘Penguin Pete’ as he playfully passes the time until he’s big enough to swim in the sea. He practices trying to walk gracefully and tries to imitate a bird in flight. He soon discovers that penguins can’t fly, but they sure can swim—and Pete turns out to be a natural!
This book is about a Penguin named Pete who is different than the rest of the Penguins, he was smaller. All of the other penguins get to swim in the sea, but Pete does not because he is so small. Pete meets a bird named Steve and they become great friends. Steve tries to teach Pete how to fly, but that does not work because penguins cannot fly. After a while of them being friends, Steve has to leave with the rest of his family and Pete loses his friend. At the end, Pete's mother lets him swim in the sea with the rest of the Penguins.
I do not know if this would be a great book for a classroom because it is kind of all over the place. It goes from Pete being made fun of, go him meeting a friend that leaves and never comes back, to him show more being able to swim in the sea with the rest of the penguins. Also, the book was very wordy and it might be hard for some children to understand. One lesson the book does teach is a little about how penguins live. So, I could use this book if I was teaching about animals. show less
a cute book discussing the life of a little penguin; him making friends, and living in the cold ocean.
