FEATURES "Old Hickory's Finest Hour" — In January 1815, General Andrew Jackson led a menagerie of American defenders against some of the British Empire's finest soldiers in a battle that would determine the future of America. "Crossing the Line: Assault into Cambodia" — During his administration, President Lyndon B. Johnson had refused his generals' requests to launch offensives into Cambodia. In 1970, President Richard M. Nixon gave the army the green light. "Pershing's Eyes in the Sky" — As a freshly minted lieutenant in the Twelfth Aero Squadron, Robert Paradise took to the sky as one of the Army Air Service's early aerial observation pilots. "The Czech Legion's Long Journey Home" — When revolution came to Russia in 1917, Czech soldiers found themselves thousands of miles from home and trapped in the midst of the Russian Civil War. "Guilty as Charged?" — The United States Senate's May 1999 decision to recommend the posthumous promotions of Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and General Walter C. Short in effect exonerated them for their performance at Pearl Harbor. That decision, however, may have been premature. "Colonel Benjamin Franklin" — Best remembered for his political activism and scientific achievements, Benjamin Franklin also played a crucial role in Britain's defense of the Colonies during the darkest days of the French and Indian War. "Guarding the Glorious Revolution" — All that stood between James II and the English throne in 1690 was the weak British and Dutch fleet commanded by Arthur Herbert. "McClellan and His Mentor" — In 1862, George B. McClellan believed he was destined for martial greatness. In a rare moment of humility, the 'Young Napoleon' thanked his former teacher, Winfield Scott, for all he had learned from him. DEPARTMENTS "Experience of War: Pearl Harbor Survivor's Story" — An army major remembers his surprise when he saw aircraft with rising sun insignia roaring over his lanai on their way to Hickam Field. "Arms and Men: The Miraculous 75mm Gun" — At the 1914 Battle of the Marne, resolute French soldiers were finally able to stop Germany's relentless march with a little help from 'Mademoiselle Soixante-quinze'. "Fighting Words: Terms from Military History" — Our lexicographer considers some of the vocabulary that evolved during World War II's Pacific campaign. | |
