This is an example of a survey book done right. Nic Bishop's writing is as clear, focused and fascinating as his stunning photographs. The text is well-formatted, sidebar captions give more detail about the pictured lizard, even indicating the scale of the photograph compared to the animal's actual size. I saw lizards I'd never seen, learned interesting facts, and was left with new-found appreciation for these hardy survivors. Bishop also leaves the reader with an authors note describing the difficulties of capturing some of these amazing photographs. I imagine this book would be hard to keep on the shelf.
Nic Bishop does a wonderful job capturing the life of a lizard whether it’s on text or in pictures. The writing gives us basic information, fascinating facts about what lizards look like, their habits, and even their life cycles. I love many things about what Nic Bishop does in his book and one of them is the fact that he highlights and writes in a larger, bolder, and different color font the main idea of the page. I think that is something that will help readers understand what is so important about each page, it sure did with me. The index and glossary at the end of the book were certainly useful, especially for someone who is just beginning to learn more about this special creature. He gives many facts and I really enjoyed this show more because I have learned so much things I did not know prior to reading this book. For example, some lizards do not lay eggs, but the mother holds them inside her body, finally giving birth. His photos are the best I have ever seen. He captures exactly what he describes and this is truly tremendous. I was shocked that I have enjoyed this book as much as I have and I am looking to purchase it for my future classroom. show less
Covering various types of lizards, Nic Bishop did an excellent job at telling the facts about each type. This book includes wonderful pictures about each type of lizard living. Not only will children enjoy this books, but adults will too. The pictures are captivating and the information is very informative. You will not want to just read this book once.
This will be an excellent book to use in a science classroom. The teacher show the students different pictures for a bell ringer leading into the discussions of reptiles. The teacher can allow the students to look at pictures of the lizards and describe what they saw and come up with a name for the particular lizard. Then the teacher will read the students the facts on each lizard chosen show more in the class. Likewise, this book can aid students who are doing a book report on lizards. This book contains wonder information and can be very useful. It has enough information that the student may only have to use this one book.
I really enjoyed reading the book. It contained a lot of facts about lizards that I did not know. The pictures were absolutely wonderful. I would use this book in a classroom. I would recommend this book to any teacher and anyone who is remotely interesting in lizards. show less

The photographs in this book are amazing. They show the intricate details and vivid colors of a lizard's skin, as if you were looking at it only a few inches in front of your eyes. The book is packed with cool facts, but the text is not overwhelming for a young reader. Some of the pages open up into a 4 page spread. This is a really neat book to have around a classroom. New fact I learned: A basilisk lizard can run across water so fast that it doesn't have time to sink!
Lizards is another great book from Nic Bishop. The photographs are stunning as always and the brief but informative text make it appealing for both younger and older students . The text includes large-font sentences for beginning readers and more detailed facts about the animals are included in the rest of the text. The captions provide interesting facts and identify the actual size of the lizards pictured so as not to be confused by the close up photographs. An index, glossary, and further reading are included. The author's note at the end explains how the photos were captured and help readers appreciate the amount of work and time it took for Bishop to capture each picture. The information is presented clearly and directly and the show more photographs clarify and extend the text. The size relationships are made clear and captions for the photographs are included. Suggested grade level: 2-5. show less
I could definitely see myself using this book as part of an animal study unit. Kids love to read about fascinating animal facts. It could be used to excite kids about an animal research project. The book could also be used as a resource for animal report research.
This book is all about lizards! The format is a picture on one page and some information about the depicted reptile on the opposite page.
I suppose you could attach this book to a lesson on biomes - maybe habitat destruction? I think this book would be at home in any low level biology class.
This book was okay. I definitely would have enjoyed it more in my younger days. It has some great close-up pictures and some neat information about the different species of lizards out there.
