Description
A collection of "stories of Downeast Maine" by native Maine writer Sanford Phippen, whose stories have been praised for hilarity and poignance in equal measure and whose characters are splendidly human and uniquely "Maine".Tags

This book has sat on my shelf for over 20 years. Short essays describing scenes from his life growing up on the Maine coast in the 1950's and 1960's it was much more than dry humor and colorful characters. The hardness of life and not only the stoicism in dealing with their lot but the self knowledge was made apparent as shown in The Return of the Native and The Reverse Toe-Hold. I was pleasantly stunned and wowed by the sincerity of the writing and done without pandering.
Free on Kindle. Could be spoilers. Worth reading, stories written about life in down east Maine. The stories are mostly character sketches drawing the year-round people; the narrator (author?) is a native who has left to teach but comes back for the summers & works at the library.
