This is a spectacular, humorous book that addresses a variety of different concepts! The pictures directly relate to the plot of the story, which can provide the children with context that will help them read/understand the text. It is filled with repetition that will provide the children the opportunity to practice concepts over and over to achieve mastery. The book contains a lot rhymes, so it would be a great book to help reinforce that concept. The book also gives reasons as to "why" the old lady ate the things that she did. The students could make predictions as to why she ate certain things and try to explain the potential reason.
I like this book because of the illustrations and language the author used throughout the book. In my opinion this is an engaging, fun, and visual book to read because of how colorful the illustrations are and how the illustrations on each page vary. For example, every page presents a new scene that introduces new characters. Also, the illustrations truly enhance the story. On all of the pages the character sizes vary, and the illustrations contain many colorful details so the reader’s attention is captured. This allows the reader to not get tired of seeing similar scenes and similar sized characters repeated throughout the book.
I enjoy the language and plot of the book. The book contains literary devices such as, repetition and show more rhyme. The story is easy to follow and children will be able to remember the sequence of events easier due to the book presenting these literary devises consistently on every page. For example, “There was an old lady who swallowed a shell. I don’ t know why she swallowed a shell. She didn’t tell. There was an old lady who swallowed a crab. Why did she grab that crawling crab?” I also feel that the book will fixate children because the story is humorous. For example, “There was an old lady who swallowed a wave. Swallowing a wave was such a big hassle, that she suddenly burped…and built a sand castle!” Children will find this plot comical because they enjoy imaginative humor that is far-fetched for their age.
The big idea or central message of the book is to introduce young children to things they will encounter when they take a trip to the beach. If children have not had an opportunity to visit a beach they will have a new understanding of what beaches look like, and also what animals populate them after reading this book. show less

Audio book: Children's book that rhymes and is so silly, it's just a perfect book to read.
Like that it also features other sealife. Love wave the best because of what it makes.
Love how it all gets connected with every new addition. By the end she's carrying a ton of things.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This old lady has no fear of swalling anything, not even things at the beach! Starting with a shell the Old lady swallows everything she needs to build a sandcastle and does so by the end of the story.
I had a teacher read to me a book in this same series, it was called, " There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly". I absolutely loved how it reviewed over what had happened previously and had rhyming words throughout.
This story could be used in Ocean/Beach themed units. I have seen projects done where the students make their own old lady and use pictures and site words and place them in her belly in the order that she ate them in the story. This story has a lot of wonderful site words for beginning readers. Of course it is Rhyming words show more as well. show less

Swallowed a Fly is a great book to read. Its one of those books that repeats lines and students will catch on and resight them with you. They love doing this, not to mention this book is funny and your students will laugh all the way through it. The pictures are also so funny and really good. Great read aloud for lower grades!
This is a silly book about an old lady who swallows a shell and keeps swallowing things to try and get rid of the shell. I would use this in class because it is a silly picture book that children can laugh at. I would use this in classrooms from 2 - 6.
Not so sure the logic of the swallowing sequence held together.
