Book description |
From the back:
Welcome to an interstellar concert beyond your wildest imaginings, as you rocket to distant worlds in twenty original science fiction tales powered by the music of the galaxies.
From a detective/choral singer whose perfect ear for music offers the only clue to catching a criminal who hs been illegally selling sentient avians ...
to an isolated space beacon keeper for whom music may prove the only means to save a spaceship caught in an ion storm...
to a photographer on a shoot in a desolate part of Africa whose search for the source of a distant melody carried on the desert winds could forever change his life
These are magnificent and evocative tales, memorable performances by today's finest masters of space and time.
Includes a brief introduction to each author. | |

Most of the author names were unknown to me, and - on the basis of the works presented here - will stay unfamiliar. I quite liked the Gene Wolfe story, but most of the others were very slight, or contrived, or were fantasy and so disappointed a hard science fiction fan like me. In other words, the title feels like false advertising. One story did stand out: The Last Song of Sirit Byar, a novelette by Peter S. Beagle. This is the one author that I might consider seeking out.
I was asked by a friend if I'd bought this as a new book, and I'm glad that I didn't, because I'd have felt robbed if I'd shelled out good money for this. Very disappointing. ( )
