Books like these are the reasons I love reading to the depths of my heart and read everything I can get my grabby hands on. Books that push all of my buttons; books that make me angry and cry with sadness then happiness and feel love; books that put me behind the MC's eyes to experience all he or she does; books that make me think and hurt my heart, just in time to warm it back up again; books that push me into their madness. I put this off for a while, 'cause I knew it was gonna be awesome and I wanted to hold out on the pleasure for as long as I could. But I am happy I finally caved, 'cause it captured me from the opening scene, followed a good plot line, and had me wrapped up in that world with Jaden and Dersai even now, past its show more ending.
While this is not really a good review, it's all I have to say for now about this book. Brava, thank you, and I will be back soon to read more from this author. (I also loved the Gaven series.) show less

Good
3.75 stars
I enjoyed this one. Again I was expecting it to be darker than it was, but that was on me.
I felt for Jaden when he was separated from Yamina. I liked that he was smart enough to do what needed to be done but didn't submit in his mind. He did make mistakes and he was prepared for the consequences to fix them.
Dersai was a good character with both the gentle and the brutal sides. I liked the way he worked to get Jaden’s trust and affection. He didn’t just expect it and took responsibility for mistakes made. I did want to know what happened to the officer who made the terrible mistake. I was glad we found out what happened to Yamina and was actually glad it wasn’t horrific.
Enjoyable nights read.

As a soldier, Jaden is defeated in battle and witness to Dersai, Emperor of Tranaden, killing Jaden's fellow soldier with a single bare hand around his throat and his black eyes glittering with evil.
Shortly after, Jaden is taken along with his 6 year-old sister to a slave auction where they are sold to different households. After years of abusive treatment by his mistress, Jaden suddenly finds himself owned by the feared enemy that ruined his life. Fear and hatred consume him and he looks for every opportunity to escape Tranaden and the demon he believe Emperor Dersai to be.
So many emotions are dealt with in this story, and it is so well written that most readers will feel those emotions deeply. It's a story of one man's journey to show more finding love in the most unlikely of places - in the arms of his enemy. It includes one of the loveliest HEA epilogues I've read in a m/m story. reminding me a bit of Judith McNaught's historical romances.

I don't think I could fully describe why this story is so great. The characters and the world that the author built makes me want to re-delve again. I read this story in HOURS, eating the words like fine cuisine. There's slavery, domination, hot m/m pairing, excellent scenes to be had. I totally recommend this story. I loved it. This is how I like my m/m stories written.
An enjoyable read with lots of idtastic elements from slave auctions and harems to demon possession and Imperial Walkers. It's a great shame the original prologue -- http://www.jcowensauthor.net/?page_id=79 -- was dumped, as the relationship between Jaden and Dersai is far more fulfilling once the reader is witness to their first meeting. (Seriously, isn't that Romance Novel 101?)
Loved it!!
