Description

An Englishman, Mackintosh fell in love with Baja California on a visit and, despite a glaring shortage of both experience and money, determined to walk its entire coast. Into a Desert Place is his account of how he equipped himself, what he saw and learned, and how he survived on this harsh and beautiful journey. The book was first published in England and then by Mackintosh himself in the United States; this is its first appearance in paperback.

Story of a man walking the length of the Mexican Baja California coastline in the 1980s. The writer demonstrates that a lot is possible, as long as you set your mind to it, although at some points he seems rather ill-prepared for what he is undertaking. Gradually, he comes to understand the land he is travelling through and he develops an appreciation and respect for it. Conflictingly, at other times he also shows an apparent lack of concern for the environment: he readily discards objects he doesn't need anymore and even throws used batteries in the ocean. Not a bad read, but not exceptional either.
