As dawn breaks, three men in different parts of the city ... three close friends and colleagues in a giant spy network ... begin to prepare for the day's routine assessment. Their task is to collect a roll of microfilm from the Eastern Zone. Jim Gallagher and his wife, Joan Okada Gallagher, make the most of their morning together while the children sleep. Kept in the dark about Jim's missions, Joan accepts the need for secrecy. But she knows that, when it's time to run, it's time to run fast!Brian Ramsey, a thirty-five year old British citizen is in bed, already dressed. Not smoking, reading, or checking the time ... just simply lying in bed, waiting ...Further north, fifty-five year old Burt Wager was busy writing a letter whilst drinking his morning coffee. All three were ready ... all three were experts and knew their work well ... So how could the day end under such horrific circumstances? When Gallagher becomes suspicious following a dinner party at his house, he makes his way to Wager and Ramsey. Wager is killed, and Gallagher badly injured. Washington take over and move Gallagher and his family. They are in immense danger and going home to California is not an option. Cold war period, spy operation goes south in Berlin. Two agents are found, one dead and one heavily wounded in the head - rest of network is extracted as soon as possible for fear of capture. After recovering from head injury our protagonist finds out that third agent in the control circle is the one who actually sold the entire operation to opposition. This hits him hard because all three have history together and were very good friends.

But problem is that our hero is alive and traitor moves on to finish his business and ensure all survivors are dead and that his employers are satisfied and don't decide to silence him.

This move escalates into a full tragedy that sees our hero hell-bent on revenge and soon dead bodies start popping all over the place.

Very interesting, fast paced spy/revenge story. Author manages to show how personal feelings and official business (of spy agencies) are almost always in conflict. Considering that book is written in late 60's it aged pretty well.

Highly recommended to all thriller fans. ( )
