the language is fairly stodgey, but despite that the tale becomes engaging. standard heroics, but the heroine (not the main character by any means) is very independent minded and plucky, and perhaps smarter than the hero.
This book written in 1885 covered the story of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce through a knight who was around both men. This held up well and overall I did enjoy it, although dragged in one or two places. I would read other historical fiction books by this author.
Really helps put history of Scottish history in perspective.
Our family loves this read by Jim Hodges...Makes this classic effertless! All the hard words are pronounced for us. The only thing missing is a Scottish accent.
