Padfield has produced a well written and well researched book about the period from 1890 to the advent of the "Dreadnought" of 1907. He deftly weaves the strands of naval races and political rivalries. It is a pity there aren't more such books dealing with the effects of naval architecture upon national policy.

He was born in British India and served as a navigating officer in P0 liners to India and Australia. After producing an acclaimed life of Admiral Karl Donitz, he wrote biographies of two other Nazi leaders. His work as a naval historian received show more the Mountbatten Maritime Prize. show less
