The conclusion to the 'Book of Umber' series and a brilliant one at that. Happenstance, also known as the Meddler, is able to see "filaments" emerging from human beings and in touching them is able to 'see' their destiny. It didn't register in my mind, until towards the end of the book, that these "filaments" are possibly akin to the silver cords referenced in several religious beliefs. In the same vein, his ability to enter the "Neither," which I took to be a possible reference to the Akashic Records (or its equivalent) was quite fascinating in that it evoked an esoteric interpretive angle to the story.
I cant believe the series is over! ( even if the conclusion story was the best) this series was written very well, and I love how the author made this magical world and our world (future world maybe) coexist in this book, although our world is apparently distroyed at the start. I loved all the characters, except maybe Jonathan. he had a bad personality!!! (but then again thats probably why he was the bad guy.) :-o
This series had great premise and characters. It was enough like other books I have enjoyed that I fell into it easily, but different enough that it had it's own unique style.
Book 3 was a little disappointing though.
I am, for the most part, annoyed when authors drag out a series. This is one series that I wish would have lasted longer. He easily could have taken this book and made it into 3 or 4 more. I think there are some great villains that needed their spotlight. There are too many characterizers with open conflicts that just conveniently resolve in the last 30 pages.
I still recommend it. I am just sad that it ended like it did.

This is the last book in the Books of Umber Series, and many of the open threads are brought to a close. Find out if Hap discovers his powers, what happens to Willy, and if the kingdom and Umber survive.
