A nice, cover-all-the-bases type book about Juadaism. It doesn't get into anything terribly deep, but it breaks down a lot of essentials, like what exactly you are and aren't supposed to do on the Sabbath, what Purim is, etc. I wanted a very basic introduction, and so I was very pleased with this. If Donin had gone into more detail, I think I would've been annoyed since he doesn't seem to be ok with things like inter-marriage and female rabbis and homosexuality.
Well it is very Orthodox. Makes a lot of sense though if truth be told. Maybe I am much more Orthodox than I thought.
Useful, informative introduction to Judaism. Helpful and well-written.
This is a wonderful reference for those interested in returning to an observant Jewish lifestyle (Baal Teshuva), or someone considering a halachic Orthodox conversion. Rabbi Donin covers all the major topics and issues. Donin's 'To pray as a Jew" book, is a great book to use along side this one.
This book is full of practical information that is the classic heritage of judaism, jewish attitudes, philosophy and law.
