I tried with this book.
Yes it is tongue in cheek. The ending you think Gilbert is going to get eaten but he doesn't. Yet, I don't know, I still did not like the book. I don't think kids will fully wrap their heads around it.

If Bob Shea is illustrating, I'm pretty much down. I love his goofy faces. And I was very invested in his journey to get a pet, and would have been devastated if he didn't get one in the end. Sorry, that was a spoiler, but I'm sure you saw it coming! The end was very cute.
In this story, Gilbert is a lonely goldfish who longs to have a new friend. His owners bring many friends by, including a dog, cat, and mouse, but none of these pets are a good match for Gilbert. This book showcases his adventure in finding a suitable pet. I liked this book because it had a fun and rhythmic prose that would gain children's interests and help them to want to continue to read. For example, "Sometimes Gilbert imagined his pet would have fur. Or feathers. Or floppy ears. But everyday and always, Gilbert imagined what it would be like to have a pet to care for a love." As you can see, the text flows very easily and naturally. While this story does not necessarily have a meaning, it is still a good book for children to read show more as it will help improve literacy skills. show less
"Gilbert Goldfish Wants a Pet" is a fun story about about a goldfish who longs for a pet to love and care for. The illustrator adds to the story by bringing the goldfish to life. The bright colors, identifiable colors of the characters, and facial expressions of the characters add a sense of animation to the story. The plot of this story moves along at a nice, consistent pace as well. Gilbert wants a pet for himself and dreams of what it would be like. A few animals come into the story but do not stay for different reasons. Finally, Gilbert's dream comes true and a catfish named "Fluffy" is put in his fish tank. The big idea of this story is the importance of loving and caring for someone other than yourself and having good company.
Cute story of a pet in distress who just wants a pet of his own. This book could provide for a great spring board for a writing prompt about the "just right" pet for a child. The colorful illustrations paired with a fun variety of fonts in the text makes this book visually pleasing. This book could be utilized in a variety of ways for students in grades Pre-K through grade 2.

This book is about a goldfish who wants a pet of his own. Every time he thinks that he has a new pet, the pet either runs away or gets smashed. Gilbert the goldfish eventually gets the pet that he has always wanted. I could use this book to teach kids that not every pet is the best pet for a person. And to find the perfect pet takes time.
