Prelutsky knows how to make children laugh. This is a book of hilarious poems about people and animals in all sorts of settings. It's a large book so it would be good as a read aloud to the whole class.
Silly, clever and always fun with great illustrations that accentuate the rhymes in just the right way - adding to the imagination rather than replacing it. The Americana flavor of this book was especially endearing to my children during the years they spent living abroad. The shorter size of this book can make it more accesible to younger children than some of Prelutsky's other books
This is a poetry book filled with several different ditties. It is very easy for even small children to understand and enjoy. My favorite is one called "Spotter and Swatter," who are two otters. Otters are playful and loving and the illustrations in the book just jump out at me and capture that.

I enjoy reading poetry,I like the rise and fall of words. While this book has several short poems I have actually read it more than once. I especially like the illustrations, they make the poems come alive.

This would be a fun just because storytime book, but because of the many different animals in their habitats and different places it could be used as a visual for habitats or a geography short talk of crazy places that actually do exist. Also, show more and possibly my favorite is that several ryhming schemes can be taught because the poems have different schemes like free verse, limmericks, haiku, and etc. show less
Fun and silly rhymes to read aloud to young children; large hardcover book with lots of engaging pictures which children will enjoy examining
I was always more of a Shel Silverstein fan as a kid, and it's taken me a while to get to liking Prelutsky's work. I did enjoy this one more than I expected. I think it was due to its shorter format and watercolor illustrations.

This is a good example of a collection of children's poetry becasue it takes situations, like the grocery store, park, or animals, subjects children are interested and puts them into simple 3 or 3 stanza poems that are fun to read and use fairly simple language. They use inventive wordplay and unpredictable rhymes. The illustrations compliment the poetry nicely and done with vibrant watercolors.
