Description

Lord John Aversin--with the help of his mageborn wife, Jenny Waynest--has fought and defeated two dragons, earning the title of Dragonsbane. But there are creatures more terrifying than dragons. Demonspawn from a dark dimension have learned to drink the magic--and the souls--of mages and dragons alike, turning their victims into empty vessels. And now they've stolen John and Jenny's mageborn son, twelve-year-old Ian. In desperation, John seeks the help of the eldest and strongest dragon: show more Morkeleb the Black. But the demons have allies, too: a vast army poised to plunge the Realm into civil war. In the coming struggle, Morkeleb will sacrifice what he values most. Jenny will question everything she trusts and believes in. And John will embark on a perilous quest for the only things capable of defeating such powerful demons--even more powerful demons . . . show less

It has dragons again, and this time Demons who are overcoming mages and dragons and forcing them to do things for power and when first a dragon that John is tasked with dealing with and then their son is taken by the demons they have to act but power is a funny and subtle thing and before they're finished they will have to do a lot they really don't want to.

It is a bit grim and gritty and the characters are really put through the wringer here. The characters do feel like older folk who are no longer as spry as they once were but overall I found it an interesting read. Not my favourite of the series or my favourite Hambly but I'd read it again.

When demonspawn steal Lord John Aversin's and Mage Jenny Waynest's son and corrupt Dragons and Mages, John seeks help from the great dragon Morkeleb, forcing them into a fight against soul-drinking demons.

Demonspawn from a dark dimension are corrupting Mages and Dragons, turning them into soulless, empty vessels. John and Jenny’s twelve-year-old son, Ian, is captured by these demons.

John is forced to ask for aid from Morkeleb the Black, the eldest dragon, who lives in self-imposed exile, dealing with his own emotional losses. John must bargain with even darker, more powerful demons to save his family, while Jenny questions her magic and beliefs.
I really enjoyed this series, though not as much as the first one. I almost would have preferred just 1 or 2 books in this series. The characters are good and the whole dragon concept is good, but it starts to drag on (sorry) a bit.
Much darker and grimmer than its predecessor, making it less enjoyable to read.
