Fiction. Romance. HTML:

The sudden death of the town marshal leaves Blue River, Texas, without a lawman...and twenty-five-year-old Dara Rose Nolan without a husband. As winter approaches and her meager seamstress income dwindles, she has three options. Yet she won't give up her two young daughters, refuses to join the fallen women of the Bitter Gulch Saloon and can't fathom condemning herself to another loveless marriage. Unfortunately she must decide--soon--because there's a new marshal in town, and she's living under his roof.

With the heart of a cowboy, Clay McKettrick plans to start a ranch and finally settle down. He isn't interested in uprooting Dara Rose and her children, but he is interested in giving her protection, friendship--and passion. And when they say "I do" to a marriage of convenience, the temporary lawman's Christmas wish is to make Dara Rose his permanent wife....

Note: I haven't read any of Linda Lael Miller's McKettricks of Texas series but I feel like this one stands on its own.

What I Loved: I really adore almost all the characters Linda Lael Miller writes! She has a way of making you care about each and every one of them and A Lawman's Christmas is no different. I immediately fell in love with Edrina and Harriet, the two small children of the story. They were spunky, fun, and very wise for their tender ages of 5 and 6. Yet they were very much children that pulled at your heartstrings. Clay and Dara Rose were fantastic characters as well. Each of them moving towards each other while leaving their pasts behind.

What I Liked: The romance was sweet and slow moving but believable. While it was not a "wow" romance, it did leave me with happy warm feelings. It was very much like a great cup of hot chocolate on a cold winters night. I also really liked the little bit we learned about Miss Alvira Krenshaw, the school teacher. She was a great character.

Complaints: None

Why I gave it a 3.5: I thought this was a sweet romance and great Christmas time story. A Lawman's Christmas definitely leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy inside!

A Lawman's Christmas by Linda Lael Miller
3 stars

Clay McKettrick arrives in Blue River, Texas to take over as marshal while he waits to build a home on the ranch land he has purchased. In the meanwhile, the former marshal's pretty wife, Dara Rose Nolan, and her two daughters are still inhabiting the town's home intended for the new marshal. When the town threatens to sell the property, Clay comes up with a solution for a home for Dara Rose and her daughters.

It was a simple book. The writing was not award winning and the plot was predictable, but it was a nice story. And for a short time I enjoyed being in Blue River with nice people. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. It's a great story about loss and pain, starting over, and discovering love. With Christmas right around the corner, it's also a great Christmas present. The story moves at a good pace and the characters will warm your heart. Clay was such a kind and loving person, it wasn't hard at all to fall in love with him right along with Dara Rose. Dara Rose has been through a lot. She lost her husband, who was the marshal before Clay, and because of his death she is about to lose a lot more. She has two little girls who are very smart and have a little bit of an idea of what's going on. It was really sad reading their story because things like this happen today. Dara Rose lived off her husband and when he passed away, she was left with nothing. The house she lives in is meant for the towns marshal. Now that Clay is in town, it's time for her and her two girls to move out. And Clay, being the kind person that he is, made an arrangement with Dara Rose for her to be able to live in the house with her two children. The more time they spent together, the more they were pulled to each other. Neither one of them expected to actually find love. Clay wanted a wife and children and that is exactly what he got, and more. There were so many moments that made me smile and laugh out loud. Dara Rose oldest daughter had to be one of the smartest six year old ever. She had a slick mouth and knew a little too much for her age, but you couldn’t help but laugh. It’s also a great Christmas story with a happy ending. Linda Lael Miller really makes cowboys super sexy. Now I cannot wait for Christmas! 4 out of 5 Stars! ( )
