This is a perfect poetry book for a beginner reader; each short and easy-to-read haiku has a picture of the dog breed being written about. Children love their pets, and many children own dogs. This is a perfect book for a pet lover, as they can connect to the poems. The illustrations match the poems, which helps the reader gain context.

A collection of haikus all depicting a different dog breed.

This is a delightful poetry book about the hound dog's many characteristics. They are haikus so they do not necessarily rhyme.

Nicely done dog haikus with Azarian's wonderful illustrations. ( )

This book was divided by different dog breeds. Each page was dedicated to a specific breed with a haiku for each breed. I loved this book because the haikus gave accurate portrayals of the different dog breeds in a fun way. As a dog lover, I always love reading about dogs. I would use this as a mentor text when introducing my students to haiku poems in our poetry unit. I would let them know that we can create haikus about anything we like, even different dog breeds. I would have each student pick an animal or something else that they love and create a haiku. These haikus should give the reader an accurate portrayal of what they are writing about. This book was listed at reading level for 6-9 year olds. Although this book uses basic language and does not have that much text, I believe that older students could benefit from reading this book too. For instance, they could read this book as inspiration for creating poetry or a fun read. All ages can benefit from reading poetry. ( )

Book description
I thought this was a great collection of poems on dogs, and each was illustrated nicely. I also went through and counted syllables and indeed, each poem is a Japanese Haiku of 5, 7, 5. This would be a great book to teach high schoolers about the different types of poems and their forms.
