With the Experiment in Terror show finding some success, amateur ghost hunters Perry Palomino and Dex Foray embark on their most terrifying investigation yet. A tiny, fog-shrouded island in the rough strait between British Columbia and Washington State has held a dark secret for decades: it was a former leper colony where over forty souls were left to rot, die, and bury each other. Now a functioning campground, Perry and Dex spend an isolated weekend there to investigate potential hauntings-but as the duo quickly find out, there is more to fear on D'Arcy Island than just ghosts. The island quickly pits partner against partner, spiraling the pair into madness that serves to destroy their sanity, their relationship, and their very lives.… (more)

I'm still not seeing what everyone loves so much about this series. I keep waiting for a breakthrough... ( )

3 1/2 stars.

Perry's annoying "self image" issues are still there, but I can see the character growing, and the creepy bits are still brilliant! But, the quasi love triangle is getting on my nerves. Basically Dex is starting to come off like a cheating ass, and Perry...well, a bit pathetic. I feel like there's so much more to the story, the dynamic, and that we might get some of those answers in the next book, so I move on.

And, I also have to remember that the first three books only span about a month in actual time. Still. The author better give me some relationship closure soon, because the prices have gone up from a buck apiece, to three bucks for book four. I'm not going to keep paying more money for NO RESULTS!!! Just, you know, stating the facts.

I am addicted to this series though. I usually find "scary" books stupid. So far The Graveyard Queen books have been the only ones to tingle me with the creep factor. (Stephen King does NOTHING for me, and even Barker's horror doesn't really "scare" me.) But, I do love the creep in these. Yep! ( )

Dex can really be 'want to strangle him or slap him silly with a smelly fish'-maddening, but he's one of the more interesting male leads I've come across and I really like him.
I also love Perry, she may think she's going nuts, she's actually more normal and lifelike than most female leads.
Karina Halle sure knows how to keep you guessing.
Loved it! ( )

This series is totally scaring the heck out of me, it just keeps getting creepier, and creepier. Perry always has a portent dream before one of her and Dex's ghost adventures which she always remembers with confusion. This time though, she couldn't remember a stitch of it, whether that's a good or bad thing, I don't know. At least for Dex and their web series I think it was a good thing since if she had remembered I'm sure she wouldn't have put a foot on that island. Her portent dream was everyone's worst nightmare, no question about that. This ghost trip had the best and worst effects on Dex's and Perry's relationship. The former Leper island they visited did a number on their psyche, especially Perry's, who was an easy target for manipulation, with her trust issues and constant musings. It turned them against each other and also brought them closer than ever. I just hope things don't get too weird between them and they can deal with the aftermath of what took place on this island later in a mature way.

Perry continues to be Perry, I've noticed how almost an entire chapter can just be Perry and her thoughts with a full on conversation between her and her. I've also noticed that I wasn't bored, no not bored, I might, laugh, scratch my head, scrunch my face at what I'm reading, or sigh, but always entertained. I think Perry is the most.....special, character I've every came across, at least to being in the head of a character like her, was....unique.

The creep factor, story, and Dex and Perry's relationship keeps growing with every book and becoming more intense. I don't want to even imagine how much more scary these stories will get, but my obsessive nature can't wait to find out. ( )

I'm going through these so quickly I am forgetting to get on GR and marked them as complete. This was def the most well written one so far, although I'm not sure if that is saying a whole lot. The writing style itself has calmed down but the plot issues are still rampant. Snipped plot lines everywhere. I am still confused on if we were dealing with ghosts or zombies in this book, too.

And Dex took a nosedive for me in this book. I don't really like his character to be honest. I don't think he treats Perry, or anyone really, with any respect or empathy. There is brusque and then there is Brusque. Perry just keeps falling for his crap, but I think it's just because she doesn't have a support group. She hasn't dated anyone since she graduated college, as far as I can tell she really doesn't have any friends. So far we've only seen her have interactions with her family, outside of Dex and EoT stuff. The short of it is, she needs a life. Then I think she would understand that it isn't normal to routinely be terrified of the person you profess to love. Or at least that the relationship dynamic is unstable. The main reason I don't like Dex, as far as this book is concerned anyway, is because he cheats on Jenn with Perry. We all know emotional cheating as been going on for a while, and in the last book they kissed, but this took it further than I think Perry should be comfortable with. She's the other woman, and she doesn't seem to care too much about it, even though she has been on the other side of that whole situation.

But I am going to keep reading because I like the stories, spastic as they are. I haven't read anything quite like that, that wanted to imitate an X-Files atmosphere while having a romantic element as well. This isn't quite urban fantasy. No to mention I like reading indie works, even though they can drive me crazy sometimes with the lack of editing. You can see the author growing as a writer while reading this series.

TLDR: Another slightly confused installment of this series where Dex takes a turn for the worst, but I'm gonna keep on reading anyway. ( )
