Choice quote: "Betty Bunny looked at her new money. She liked it very much."

Um, gross. Keep this book away from your children. ( )

Summary: Betty Bunny goes shopping with her mother, who says that Betty can get one new toy. But Betty Bunny wants every toy in the store! She throws a tantrum when her mom tells her that if she's greedy, she won't get a toy at all, and Mother carries her out of the store. Later, Mother and Daddy give Betty Bunny some money. They tell her that the money is hers to spend, but when it runs out, it runs out, and that will teach her why she can't have everything she wants. Betty Bunny picks out a small toy, and saves the rest of the money.

Review: I really liked this book; it was very realistic (aside from the characters being animals rather than people) and very relatable. It's a book that teaches a lesson, but also that entertains. There were a lot of little things in there that are very amusing, like the older brother's sarcasm, which I appreciated, but would likely go over the heads of young readers. Overall, a very good book!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a social story about teaching young children that they can’t always get everything they want. It reminded me of my younger siblings who when we would go to toy stores would whine and yell if they didn’t get what they wanted. The main character, Betty, develops over the text from filling up her cart full of toys to just picking out one toy that she really wanted and saving the rest of her money. Similar to many of my other logs, the characters in the book are all portrayed through animals who personify human families. This intrigues readers while also paralleling the socio-emotional development that students at that interest level are going through. The writing in this book is a bit too sophisticated for readers at that interest level to read independently; however, this would be a great read-aloud for a class that could incorporate several teachable moments throughout the text led by the teacher. Finally, this book portrays very familiar family dynamics in which the mother takes her children to the toy store and the father intervenes after he comes home from work. Most families would be included under this umbrella of mother, father, and three children, but it could also exclude different families (single-parent, stay at home father, etc.). The main message of this story is to appreciate non-materialistic things in your life and to be modest in what you ask for. ( )

Betty Bunny will no doubt grow up to have a very lucrative career on Wall Street. ( )

Overall I think that this was a good story, I do think that it might send the wrong message and show children that it might be alright to be sneaky with their parents. I think a better message would have been to be grateful for what they have and what they are given because some do not even have toys. ( )
