Does pushy newcomer Venetia have her eye on Peter, the handsome rector? Is Jeremy, her husband, really making a success of the new health club? And why does Willie's new love set a vicious tongue wagging? In the Royal Oak, the usual banter has turned to bitter wrangling as the rector's wife Caroline makes a challenge over an show more ancient country tradition and splits the village her husband had so recently united. As the people of the village use the power of words to reconcile or divide, Peter finds that it is what isn't talked about that threatens to cause madness, confusion and tragedy. show less

This was one of the best that Ms Shaw has delivered so far. I enjoy the village atmosphere, the delicate descriptions of each characters house, the way they live. Added to all that here was plenty of intruige in this one, real suspense and drama that kept me page turning. Thoroughly enjoyable
A gentle village story, obviously part of a series although complete in itself. Quite a pleasant read.
Good Grief! I struggled through the first 113 pages, but then gave up in disgust.

I'm not surprised that this book was on the 10p shelf as it is absolute rubbish. It's got the most cardboard characters imaginable, whose speech and thoughts are more stilted and unrealistic than in any book I've read since "Cradle" by Arthur C. Clarke & Gentry Lee, which I didn't finish either.
If you like the Miss Read books, these are along a similar theme. You will love the cross-section of characters and the way the story is told from different people. Highly recommended.
Have not read these in order, and am often confused by what the characters are up to.
The elderly Baxter sisters have a terrible secret which is revealed amidst tragic circumstances. Muriel and Ralph return from their honeymoon. Venetia and Jeremy overcome financial difficulties and begin to be accepted by the village people.
