Jake's Review: I think its totally awesome that mom got to meet the dude who wrote Captain Underpants. The C.U. books were the first set of books I read to myself without my parents help. I still remember how they used to read them to me at night too when I was a baby -- and btw Mom and Dad used to fight over whose turn it was to read that night (mom used to play the I gave birth to him and it really hurt argument). This book was really funny and I liked how you found out how George and Harold became friends. The pranks they played on the bullies were hilarious -- but a little scary at times. I liked the comics that George and Harold created and I think I want to make my own comics now. The stuff I didn't like was that there were barely show more any flip o rama's and at times the story was kinda scary and sad. I can't wait till mom scores me the next book!

Mom's Review: I have been a huge fan of the Captain Underpants, and Dav Pilkey, since my sister introduced them to me when my son was born. Being the awesome aunt she is, she bought my newborn son the first three books in the series for us to read to him. Well, we waited till he was 3, but from the first page the whole family was hooked. We recently introduced them to Jesse, who is 3, and well, another fan is born. My highlight of going to BEA this year was being introduced to the man himself and receiving a signed copy of this book. This installment is a wee bit darker than previous stories, but still showcases Pilkey's wonderfuly wickedl sense of humor. The man truly understands what entertains middle school readers (lots of potty humour and showcasing parents as morons), while at the same time emphasizing the importance of standing up against bullies and what a true friend is. I enjoyed the back story about how George and Harold became friends and I am now counting down the days until the 10th book comes out. Mr Pilkey -- I love you and hope you enjoy Canada when you come to visit -- Captain Awesome will take good care of ya! (Sorry I cannot make it as my dh dragged me to the other side of the country to live -- and well you know what -- how about you come and visit Calgary too -- we need you out here!)

Mom's Rating: 9/10

PSC REVIEW: Just when you think the coast is clear, here comes another Captain Underpants adventure. Yes, I only read this book because I had to for a review, but I’m here to tell you it wasn’t painful. Pilkey’s got his trademark goofy characters and humor. And he’s got a few zingers thrown in there as food for thought. Harold and George have been sent to the juvenile detention hall because they’ve been accused of robbing a bank. They, of course, are innocent. The evil deed was actually perpetrated by their evil twins. They really don’t find lockup much different from school, except there’s a library and books and an art teacher. The best part of the book is the story about how Harold and George met in kindergarten and show more outsmarted the 6th grade bully. And that’s quite a story. As a librarian wanting “deep” literature for my kids to read, this may fit the bill but not in the way I planned. I often find myself telling kids who have their nose stuck in the Captain Underpants books, “QUIT READING! I’m trying to teach.” show less

It was fun to see the backstory of Harold and George; however, this installment of the Captain Underpants series was heavy - literally and figuratively. The ratio of words to pictures was significantly higher than in the earlier books. This made the story more interesting to me, but slightly less engaging for my six year old... the reason for my reading the series in the first place. It took us much longer to plough through #9 than any of #s 1-8. Already started #10 and it seems to be more of the same. Maybe we'll finish it by Valentine's Day?
The main message for this book is that good guys will always win over evil.
I enjoyed this book because of the silly plot. I enjoyed the outrageousness of a superhero principal and two young boys. It was also interesting to see that this book had a time hop portion. It was such an easy transition that I almost forgot that it was a time hop. I also enjoyed that the origin story for the friendship of the two boys was explained during this book considering that it is the 9th book of the series.
I also enjoyed the silly comments throughout the book that were aimed more towards older readers such as “there is no room for common sense when it came to zero tolerance” (referring to the zero tolerance rule for schools). The book is filled show more with such comments and I think it is quite humorous for older readers and helps appeal to more children. I also enjoyed the style in which the book is written in. Many children would rather look at pictures then read long paragraphs but this book contains both, allowing children to enjoy the graphics while having the children interested enough to read the long paragraphs. show less
It’s been six long years since the last release of a Captain Underpants book, and this ninth installment finds George and Harold locked up! That’s also where the titular villain finds them, and so begins another epic struggle between good and evil. But before he can tell readers that story, Pilkey transports George and Harold back in time, all the way back to Kindergarten — and before they’ve drawn up their underpants-clad hero. So what will they do when they encounter a bully? They’ll rely on their great skills as pranksters and inventors, the same skills that made their early adventures getting into trouble with Mr. Krupp so funny. They are also drawing other great comics. Perhaps the best thing to happen to the Captain show more Underpants series was to take Captain Underpants out of it (at least for a while). Another book is due out in 2013. It may have been too long for the kids who read the series the first time around to be motivated to read this one, but surely there is no end to the up-and-coming readers who will thrill to the crude humor and the fact that the children are in charge. show less
This time-travel epic focuses on George and Harold when they met at age 6, became friends and joined forces to battle the 6th grade bully and his goons who've been terrorizing the kindergarteners. Typical wackiness ensues! Although you have to wonder at the cunning of mere 6 year olds...
Light hearted, fun, adventurous. The grandchildren love reading it.
