In this story there is some character development when she gave her mother a present on her birthday and was rewarded with a kiss. She is no longer just doing things for the stimuli. There is some character development through these actions with her mother.

A young girl learns about giving, and receiving gifts. She understands what faces look like (giving an angry look). She also talks about when she receives a gift, like for her birthday, she says "thank you".
