It is 1898 and Jeff has just lost his father leaving him with a very poor farm. He is planning to leave and look for something better when a tall, rough looking fellow riding a mule shows up and asks where the nearest town is. The stranger is Jack and he lets Jeff tag along on a quest to track down the last surviving bison left alive in the USA.

The journey will eventually include Logan, an indigenous man plus adventures including being accused of murder and threaten to be hung by a town constable who does not listen to the evidence. There is also a visit to a Mennonite community where they receive help but also help the community.
