Gangster is an epic saga of violence and destiny that weaves through the life of Angelo Vestieri as he goes from soldier to mob boss. This novel has everything that you can ask for in a gangster novel: friendship, betrayal, love, and brutal violence. In the twilight of his life Vestieri takes in an orphan boy, who is very reminiscent of himself as a youth. This makes Vestieri question his path in life and reshapes the way he thinks. This is well written and well-crafted with memorable characters.
In many ways Gangster is reminiscent of The Godfather. It was that same wide-sweeping epic kind of feel to it. Caracatera is a talented writer who can really weave together a spell binding tale as evidenced in this novel. This is one of the best show more gangster novels I have read and is highly recommended.

Excellent. I havn't enjoyed a gangster/crime novel this much since I read the Godfather a few years ago. Powerfully emotional and dramatic. A MUST READ!

Al comienzo de la historia conocemos a Gabe, un joven que a fines de los 90 se acerca a un hospital para visitar a un anciano moribundo, es el hombre que le acogió cuando era un chico abandonado y le dio un hogar. Esta persona es Ángelo Vestieri y fue el gángster más peligroso y poderoso en la historia de EE.UU.
Aparece en el hospital una misteriosa mujer llamada Mary, que conoció bien a Ángelo, y Gabe y ella se ponen a reconstruir la vida del mafioso. Así el lector toma contacto con una gran saga familiar que se inicia en 1.906, donde se narra el origen de la familia de Ángelo y los motivos oscuros por los que sus padres escaparon de Italia luego de tener un trágico incidente con la mafia siciliana. Angelo Vestieri wordt geboren op de boot die hem in 1906 vanuit Italië naar New York brengt. Zijn vader is op de vlucht voor de wraak van de Camorra. Hij probeert zijn zoon fatsoenlijk op te voeden, maar Angelo wordt als vanzelf de wereld van de misdaad ingetrokken. In 1996 ligt hij op zijn sterfbed. Zijn levensverhaal wordt dan verteld door een man - die hem dagelijks bezoekt - aan de vrouw met wie Angelo ooit een verhouding had. Pas aan het slot wordt duidelijk wie de verteller is en wat zijn verhouding tot de vrouw is. De schrijver heeft een meeslepend verhaal geschreven en een overtuigend beeld gegeven van het onontkoombare in een mensenleven. Bovendien schetst hij een schitterend tijdsbeeld van New York. Wie denkt dat met Billy show more Bathgate (E.L. Doctorow) het ultieme verhaal van de gangster verteld is, moet Carcaterra lezen.
