Cricket is not all about its champions and legends, for there are far more one match wonders populating cricket's long history than those who have been long lionised. Keith Walmsley sets out to rescue some of these forgotten one match wonders and restore them to their rightful place in history.

Featured is Emile McMaster, who went on a holiday to South Africa and came back a Test player (not that he knew that at the time). He was out first ball in his only innings. Fred Hyland, Dick Wooster and Michael Harbottle also get a look in, with Harbottle going on to be featured in the Dictionary of Biography for his military service.

There's some wonderful little snippets about players you've never heard of with the only drawback being the extensive pieces two living cricketers, which don't hold the same interest of McMaster and others long dead that feature in "Brief Candles". There's a sequel to this which I shall be tracking down. ( )

Epigraph
Out, Out brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more.
Dedication
First words
One of cricket's many delights is its ability to produce unlikely - some might say quirky, events which, though trivial, appeal to those of a certain cast of mind; a cast found perhaps disproportionally among cricket lovers.
