Rye, Sonia, and Dirk head back to Weld to drop off Dirk's girlfriend, but find the Warden is not taking care of the city or its people. The trio decide they can help most by seeking Rye's brother Sholto, who departed via the Silver Door. Through this door, the trio enter a wasteland full of bones and snails, traveling afar, finding a few scattered, fearful people. Off they go to locate the breeding grounds for the skimmers. They become separated, with Rye and Sonia imprisoned only to find Sholto seems to be working to breed skimmers, which can hunt in the daylight. Together, they hatch a desperate plan to snuff the new breed. 3.5 stars. ( )

The second in the Three Doors trilogy, this is another entertaining adventure with Rye and Sonia continuing their quest to find who is sending the skimmers (vicious dragon like creatures) to their walled city of Weld, this time travelling beyond the silver door.

It's got a strange quirk of plot, in that at the beginning of this book, they are still on the other side of the golden door, so the first few chapters involve getting back to Weld, and then getting ready to go through the silver door. This is a rather awkward and slow start to the book, it must be said.

Through the silver door they find yet another completely different aspect to their world, one with flesh eating snails (ew), giant predatory birds, and all the human inhabitants enslaved to a mysterious Master.

Again, there were plot holes where things are glossed over or not very well explained, but overall this was a good fun story that Mr Bear and I both enjoyed. Rye and Sonia are both excellent heroes to adventure with. ( )

The second book in the Three Doors Trilogy. In the first book, Rye helped to rescue his older brother, Dirk, and overthrow the tyrant Olt. However Olt was not the source of the deadly flying beasts called skimmers who return time and time again to ravage the City of Weld, beasts that the Warden won't listen to suggestions to stop.

This time Rye chooses the silver door as this is the one that he feels his other brother, Sholto, chose. Along with companions, the orphan Sonia, Dirk and his sweetheart Faene, they continue their quest, aided by Rye's pouch of magical objects. They will encounter strange and often desperate people in this desolate landscape, along with unimagined dangers. This is another fast paced and exciting adventure from Emily Rodda. ( )
