Claymore, Volume 1: Silver-Eyed Slayer

I was excited to start reading this manga series. I originally watched the anime series for Claymore. My husband has been reading the manga for a while and kept asking when I was going to read it. This book was an excellent opening to this series, I really enjoyed it. Right now there are 24 volumes in the Claymore series.

This volume follows the first anime episode very closely. It is an excellent introduction to Claire and the demon fighting Claymore. The demons are called Yoma, and in this book we learn about the Claymore’s role in society and how the Claymore become these powerful demon-fighters.

It is a very engaging world with characters you really care about...and of course some awesome fighting scenes between Claymore wielding show more women and evil demons.

Yagi does an excellent job of humanizing Claire and making us care about her. This isn’t all about kicking Yoma butt (although there is a lot of this). We learn about the sacrifices the Claymore make in their effort to protect humanity and we learn how painful it is for them to leave some of their humanity behind.

The illustration throughout is very well done, I really enjoyed it. Some of the scenes are beautifully detailed. I never had trouble recognizing characters or following the story.

This is a traditional Japanese manga, so you read from back to front and right to left.

Overall I really enjoyed this first installment in the Claymore manga series. Excellent world-building, explosive fight scenes, and characters I actually care about make for a wonderful read. There is something about a girl wielding a sword that intrigues me. I love that this manga has a strong female lead. There's just enough blood and gore that I can stomach. The plot is okay so far, nothing great. I hope it gets better in the next volumes.

So here I am, years late but the upside is that I don't have to wait for volumes to come out.
This is good start even if there wasn't much story, the art is not really to my liking but I'm intrigued enough to keep going.

It's nothing inventive, but the pace and style of Claymore had me finishing it in one session.

Lots of action; lots of scene changes.

A good introduction is tough to write because the artist/writer has to fill the reader in on what the world is like and move the plot along enough to keep the reader's interest. It also means that the artist/writer has to have well-developed characters and the world already in mind.

The plot's not bad, but the way it's written doesn't draw me in, and the art is somewhat monotonous. All the people look exactly the same.

Certains d'entre vous connaissent peut-être le jeu de société Les Loups-Garous de Thiercelieux. Dans ce jeu où chaque joueur incarne soit un villageois soit un loup-garou les uns doivent éliminer les autres.

Tout le sel du jeu réside dans le fait que les loups-garous sont, le jour, des habitants que rien ne distingue des autres villageois. Par contre, la nuit, ils s'éveillent pour dévorer les habitants.

C'est un peu le même principe qui est au coeur du manga Claymore. Dans cet univers, des démons appelés Yomas se cachent parmi la population et font régner la terreur en dévorant les villageois qui constituent leur seule nourriture. Ce problème est particulièrement épineux à résoudre car non seulement, ils sont show more extrêmement forts mais en plus sont indétectables lorsqu'ils revêtent leur apparence humaine.

Pour lutter contre ce fléau, un groupe connu sous le nom de Claymore a été créé. Le groupe tire son nom de l'énorme épée que porte chacun des membres — la claymore est une grande épée (plus d'un mètre de long) qui s'utilisait habituellement à deux mains.

Ce groupe est composé d'hybrides c'est à dire d'humains ayant du sang de démon dans leurs veines. Les hybrides sont uniquement des femmes car, contrairement aux hommes, elles parviennent à supporter et à contenir la part de démon qu'elles ont en elles. Dans ce premier tome, nous suivons l'une d'elle nommée Claire dans l'accomplissement de ses missions.

Le thème du manga est intéressant et les phases de combats alternent avec la découverte d'éléments liés aux démons et à l'organisation Claymore. Le scénario n'est pas d'une extrême richesse mais le mystère auréolant les démons et les membres de Claymore qui les combattent revêt suffisamment d'intérêt pour tenir le lecteur en haleine. Sur le plan des dessins, les personnages féminins constituant les Claymore sont très bien réussis par contre, les monstres et le reste des dessins sont plutôt passables. J'ai été notamment surpris du peu de volume donné au dessin, tout semble être à plat sans profondeur ni remplissage.

En conclusion, c'est un premier tome intéressant pour les amateurs du genre, les autres n'en garderont pas un souvenir impérissable. Ceux qui persévéreront seront récompensés car les tomes 3 et 4 donnent un coup d'accélérateur à la série en nous plongeant dans l'enfance de Claire.
