    -------------------------------------

    "JESSE, DON'T!" SHE SCREAMED.

She let her bag slip to the floor as she sprinted down the corridor toward him.

He was hunkering on the sill before she'd covered half the distance to the window. With the same silly smile on his face, he turned back to her, gave a small wave of his hand, and stepped off the sill.

Dawn screamed as she saw him topple and fall. Then she threw herself the rest of the distance to the window.

There were several more screams from students still outside and then a squishy sot of crash. As Dawn stared down, she saw that Jesse had hit the path below and lay in a crumpled heap.

Dawn felt battered by sickness and shock. Her legs weren't able to support her any longer, and she slid to the floor.

She'd just seen Jesse Stern cheerfully step out of a third-floor window thinking he could fly.
