I enjoyed reading "A Pocket Full of Kisses" by Audrey Penn for three reasons. First, Penn's first book, The Kissing Hand, is one of my all time favorite books. It was a book I was given as a child by my parents before going off to school. Since I enjoyed reading The Kissing Hand, of course I was going to enjoy reading another book by Penn that is similar. Second, the illustrations on each page are so detailed. You can see the distinct features of every raccoon depicted in the story (ex: smiles, love, tears etc). Third, I enjoyed the concept of the book. Even though I was an only child, I found it enjoyable to read a text where Chester felt jealous and afraid because he had a new baby brother. "A Pocket Full of Kisses" is a book related show more to the book "The Kissing Hand". In the book, "The Kissing Hand", Chester was comfortable being the only child, but now his mother can love him and his brother the same. The message behind the text is that, even if you have a sibling, or a big family, this does not mean you are loved any less, there is just more love to give. show less
Chester and his family welcome a new baby to their raccoon family. Chester's mom gives him a kiss on the hand to put in his pocket to have anytime he wants his mothers kiss. Chester becomes sad when he sees his mother giving his kisses away to his baby brother. Chester's mom explains to him, she has lots of kisses for both of her kids.
Reaction: Pocket full of kisses is great story to tell when you are dealing with new additions to your families. Since I want to work with families as a whole, I think this book would be a great tool to use when introducing a change in family dynamics.
Extension: Draw a picture of Chester showing his different types of emotions he went through. Another extension is a family board project, showing show more different members (pictures) of each child's family. show less

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the illustrations as well. The illustrations in Audrey Penn's books are so well illustrated that one could probably figure out most of the story without reading the words. As always in Audrey Penn's stories, the language is clear and well written. The characters are racoons but that doesn't mean they aren't still relatable and believable. The story engages the reader and keeps them interested. This story is about Chester getting a new silbing and adjusting to the new lifestyle; something almost all children can relate to.
I enjoyed this book! I loved the bold and colorful illustrations. The illustrations really enhanced the text and brought the story to life. Throughout this book, the author uses a lot of descriptive language which also enhances the book. An example of this is "Chester grinned so wide, the tips of his silky black mask crinkled upward." The characters, mainly Chester, are easy to relate to! In this book, Chester is jealous of his new baby brother. The main message of this story is that no matter how many brothers and sisters you have, your parents still love you all equally!
