Will Weaver’s short story collection A Gravestone Made of Wheat contains some very good rural writing straight from America’s midwestern heartland. Most of these are gentle slice-of-life/character sketches full of warmth, compassion, and sensitivity. The stories are largely set in Minnesota, and it’s easy to imagine each tale of these rustic folks as part of a quilt or needlepoint depicting a typical farming community.
