Description

Richard Lafargue is an eminent plastic surgeon haunted by dirty secrets. He has an operating theatre in the basement of his chateau and keeps his partner Eve imprisoned in her bedroom, a room he has equipped with an intercom and 300-watt speakers through which he bellows orders. Eve is only allowed out to be paraded at cocktail parties and on the last Sunday of each month, when the couple visit a young woman in a mental asylum. Following these outings, Lafargue humiliates Eve by forcing her show more to perform lewd sexual acts with strangers while he watches through a one-way mirror. In alternating chapters, Jonquet introduces seemingly unrelated characters - a criminal on the run after murdering a policeman, and an abducted young man who finds himself chained naked in a dark chamber, forced to endure all manner of physical torture at the hands of a mysterious stranger, whom he calls Mygale, after a type of tropical spider. All of these characters are caught in a deceitful web, waiting to meet their fate. show less

i seriously have no idea what to say about this book. i have no idea how i feel about it. i didn't even know how many stars to give it, so i erred on the side of caution. fucked up and exploitative? interesting comment on revenge and gender? neither? both and more? i already knew the "big twist," since one of my students had to be taught the phrase "spoiler alert" during class one day, unfortunately too late, but that may have been why i read it. i would have liked to have had fresh eyes going in, but oh well. i will see the almodovar film, that's for sure, since i feel like i would be less creeped out by his take on some of the more difficult issues here.
whoa, the ending was very different than the movie and I think i like it more. less soap opera and more thriller. really liked the structure but saw the reveal coming obviously since I've seen the movie, but even so there was some pretty heavy-handed foreshadowing that annoyed me. I appreciated the attention to detail tho
An erotic thriller. A wealthy and enraged plastic surgeon (Richard) takes his revenge (in a very unique way) out on the man (Vincent) who raped his daughter who in the aftermath of the crime is left mentally unbalanced. The relationship between the doctor and his helpless victim over time becomes one of complete domination and manipulation. In the meantime Vincent's best friend (Alex) who unbeknownst to the above mentioned doctor played an even more pivotal role in the assault on his daughter is now hiding out from the law for robbing a bank and in the act-of killing a cop and trying desperately to find a way out of the country. Intelligently plotted and fast paced--it has more than a few deft twists. A somewhat surprising ending. I show more guess love conquers all. show less
Plot:
Richard Lafargue is a renowned plastic surgeon with a secret: He keeps his girlfriend Eve locked up in the upper floor of his house, controlling her life completely and revelling in seeing her suffering. Eve endures this treatment mostly stoically, even when Richard prostitutes her. Richard always gets especially vicious towards Eve after visiting his daughter Viviane who stays at a psychiatric facility.
At the same time the thug Alex is looking for an escape after a bank robbery that went a bit wrong.

The book is rather short and it shouldn’t have been any longer, either. But as short as it was, it was a very good read.

It's easy to see why Almodovar has chosen to make this into a film. The story is very well executed, and though it's a short book, there are plenty of plot twists.
wish i'd read this before watching the film 5 years ago, but i really loved the style
