You read Kinsella when you want fluffy, not terrible hard thinking pieces. But the thing I've noticed about her work is that underneath the marshmallow, there tends to be some kind of point in play that resonates with the reader. Wedding Night is no different from Kinsella's previous books, in that it involves a madcap character who always gets herself into scapes and how she ends up getting out of them. For that I'm grateful that when I need something that doesn't require much processing while I read, Kinsella delivers. It's a fun romp that really is a meditation of what is love. Recommended when you need something to brighten your day or just want to have fun.
After a mysterious prologue and the back and forth chapters between sisters Lottie and annoying Fliss, I wasn't even sure why I was still reading along, with other books waiting for my attention. As I kept at it, I realized I was laughing out loud at this true farce of a story which took off mid-way and didn't stop til the last line. The machinations that Fliss goes through, aided unknowingly by Ben's old friend Lorcan, are truly inspired and funny. Add in some cross continent travel, great descriptions of the various locales and people and Kinsella delivered a fun, if slightly dark take on how to break up a marriage.
Fabulous book about sisters, personal responsibility, co-dependency, and The Unfortunate Choices we all make when we are suffering from a loss in life. Light, fun, comedic, and heartfelt, Kinsella knows how to touch on major themes without losing the thread of the story or losing the laughter. A must read for summer!
I always turn to Kinsella when I feel glum because I know she won't disappoint. This novel is no exception: the style is the same, the stories are fairly standard, but Kinsella has a way with words and imagery which will always draw a chuckle if not an outright laugh.
The final chapters are a bit long in this one: the author could have tidied it up, but ultimately, as readers, we don't necessarily want to leave Lottie and Fliss quite right away - their adventures are so fun and their reactions, albeit exaggerated, so profoundly what we all feel, that the end feels like leaving behind a couple of good friends.
A delicious picker-upper or simly a great fun read.
Easy fun typical Sophie Kinsella read. After breaking up with her boyfriend woman runs into her 1st love and immediately marries him on the rebound. The boyfriend realizes his mistake and races around to make things right along with her sister and the husband's bestfriend. The honeymoon Newlywed Game was laugh out loud funny.
Charlotte (“Lottie”) Graveness is 33, and has been dating Richard Finch for three years. When he tells her he has an important question for her, she is convinced he is finally proposing, but alas, he demurs, and Lottie, heartbroken, breaks up with him. Her older sister, Felicity, fears Lottie will once again make one of her “unfortunate choices” as she has after past breakups. Lottie and Fliss alternate as narrators as the story unfolds.

Sure enough, Lottie decides to get married immediately to her boyfriend from fifteen years ago, Ben Parr, and about whom she now knows nothing. But at their reunion over lunch, they find they still seem to share a sexual frisson, which Lottie chooses to interpret as love.

Fliss is determined to show more stop the marriage or at least make sure it can be annulled. She uses her position as editor of a travel review magazine to bully her contacts in Greece, where Lottie is heading for her honeymoon, to make sure no “honeymoon” occurs. She is aided in her efforts by Lorcan Adamson, Ben’s best friend of a sort, who is also opposed to this precipitous marriage.

All four of them, plus the divorced Fliss’s seven-year-old son Noah (the funniest character in the book), head to Ikonis and the luxury hotel where Ben and Lottie have booked the honeymoon suite. Chaos ensues - some of it over the top, and some of it roll-on-the-floor funny, and it comes out in a satisfying way.

Evaluation: I like this least of the Kinsella books I have read, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t whip through it, often laughing hard enough to bring tears. I do think this story is a bit too much Marx-Brothers-ish though, but if you take it in the spirit of fun, it will provide you with a very entertaining reading experience.

Rainy, cold afternoon? Check. Comfy couch, pot of tea? Check. Perfect time to settle in with the latest by Sophie Kinsella? Absolutely! And so with delicious anticipation I turned to the first page of Wedding Night.

Lottie is 33 years old - she wants to get married and start a family. She's sure that her boyfriend Richard is the one. And she's sure he's going to pop the question - after all it's been three years.

Her sister Fliss has already married and has a beautiful son. But not a beautiful marriage - she's in the midst of an acrimonious divorce.

Well, Richard doesn't pop the question and Lottie runs headlong into the arms of her old flame Ben - and right up to the altar! Fliss is determined to keep Lottie from making what she sees show more as a terrible mistake. And Ben's friend and business colleague thinks the same. What ensues is a hilarious scheme to sabotage - you guessed it - their Wedding Night.

Kinsella uses both sisters to narrate the book. It was great fun to have not one but two female leads. Their personalities are miles apart, but I found each character quite engaging. Yes, some of the situations are far fetched - but I'm not reading for reality - I'm reading for entertainment. And Wedding Night definitely kept me entertained. It was light and funny and I know I had a smile on my face much of the time. (This would make such a great rom-com movie)

Pick up a copy of Wedding Night for your beach bag this summer!

For me, Sophie Kinsella is the Queen of Chick Lit.
