Het (nogal hoogdravende) voorwoord belooft te bewijzen dat geschiedenis absoluut kan helpen om de actualiteit beter te verstaan. Slechts enkele bijdragen in dit boek maken dit ook echt waar. De eerste bijdragen (over de Arabische Lente en over de groei van China) waren ronduit teleurstellend want handelden meer over het heden dan het verleden, maar de daaropvolgende essays over Japan (en de Fukushimaramp) en over gewelddadige minderheden in de islamwereld (naar aanleiding van Osama Bin Laden) zijn pareltjes van (voor mij) nieuwe inzichten. De meeste andere bijdragen zijn nogal Frans georiënteerd en iets minder interessant. ( )
