I would probably be more enthusiastic about this book if I were more into illuminations and heraldry. If historical re-creations are your interest, this book goes into a large degree of detail about preparing quill pens and vellum, etc.

Alphabets: one of the few books I have seen discuss runes and Batarde. Lovett also includes numerals and punctuation for each alphabet, with letter groupings by shape and, on the facing page, a historical example.

She includes some practical advice on paid work and how to experiment and includes essays on handwriting (Sassoon) and typefaces (Zapf).

The second half of the book goes into great detail about illumination, heraldry, and how to gild.
