It took me a while to get into this paranormal mystery. I don't know whether it was that I'm not big on historicals or that the beginning was bogged down with world building. I found Whyborne to be annoying at first with his multiple insecurities but he did grow on me. Griffin was a good character from the get go. Christine was great in her secondary role and was a true fiend to Whyborne. The mystery adventure was well plotted and set the pace for future adventures. All told, this was a fun, quick read. Ms Hawk just rocks as an author. ( )

It is a delight to come late to a series and fall in love knowing there's a bunch more books already awaiting me. Several years ago I was not yet ready, I hadn't gotten into historical romance yet. Nor I did realize this series resided uncomfortably close to Lovecraft's universe. I am well and truly hooked. *rubs hands together* ( )

This one had been sitting on my to-read shelf for almost six years before I finally got my hands on it. SIX YEARS! That’s the one danger of adding too much to that pile - a gem like that languishing there, forgotten, unloved, for such a long fucking time.

Well, I am loving the shit out of it NOW. Whyborne is my favorite kind of character, an awkward, quirky, seemingly ‘boring,’ man - until suddenly, confronted with a weird-ass situation, he’s given a chance to show his true colors. Plus, he’s a fantastic narrator. The chemistry between him and Griffin is great from the start. The outgoing, charming Griffin is just what Whyborne needs to get out of his shell and realize his full potential. They complement each other so well... On a side note, the sex is hot.

Their budding relationship was just the icing on the cake, though, because the supernatural mystery was a wonderful treat all by itself - it was surprisingly well-paced, and kept me on the edge of my seat until the moment of the big reveal. The writing style of this author is just lovely. All in all, an amazing start to a series! ( )

I have a feeling that this book makes me remember another books I read, but I can't tell which. Reading this book was like visiting an old friend, I was at home with the characters and the plot was everything I needed it to be. It's the kind of fantasy for adults that I was looking for, and I'm the happiest reader since I find it. ( )

Book description
Repressed scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has two skills: reading dead languages and hiding in his office at the Ladysmith Museum. After the tragic death of the friend he secretly loved, he's ruthlessly suppressed any desire for another man. So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible. Griffin left the Pinkertons following the death of his partner, hoping to start a new life. But the powerful cult which murdered Glenn has taken root in Widdershins, and only the spells in the book can stop them. Spells the intellectual Whyborne doesn't believe are real. As the investigation draws the two men closer, Griffin's rakish charm threatens to shatter Whyborne's iron control. When the cult resurrects an evil sorcerer who commands terrifying monsters, can Whyborne overcome his fear and learn to trust? Will Griffin let go of his past and risk falling in love? Or will Griffin's secrets cost Whyborne both his heart and his life?
