This is a beautiful story in both concept and execution. The book follows a boy who wants to start a collection like his older brothers, so he chooses to collect words. He starts of small and the collection soon grows until he has thousands and thousands of words. Max then realizes he can connect these words in millions of different ways to make sentences and stories. Banks uses a variety of beautiful fonts for each word, making this an entertaining read. It also encourages a love for words and an excitement for expanding vocabulary. Max's fascination for words becomes contagious to his brothers, as it does for the reader.
I don't particularly like the way the people are drawn, but I love the liveliness of the composition, suitable to each part of the story. And it's a wonderful story, mostly (I'm not sure why we need the mean brothers).

Perfectly reminds me of magnetic poetry... I made a kit of it to share with my kids and we did have fun with it, even though we had far fewer words than Max does.
When his brothers won't share their stamp and coin collections, Max starts a rather unusual collection of his own: words clipped from magazines and newspapers, then creatively recombined into stories. With its deft interplay of words and pictures, this book celebrates the magic of language and-best of all-out-of-the-box thinking.
Max's brothers have collections but won't share their coins or stamps with him. So Max decides to make himself his own collection, of words! As his collection grows so does the interest of his brothers.

Loved the story and the illustrations.

The book starts out as Max feels a little left out because his brothers collect traditional things like stamps and coins. Max decides to collect words. The words look like they're clipped from magazines and newspapers. Eventually he has enough words for a story. The book then becomes a story within a story. The brothers join in on the fun! The illustrations present interesting perspectives from different angles. Some of the pictures take on the characteristics of shape poems. This would be a great book to inspire writing.
Max has a brother who collects stamps and a brother who collects coins. Max wants a coin or a stamp, but his brothers won't share. So Max decides to start collecting something too-- words! He collects big and small words, new and favorite words, until he has piles and piles. He finds he can put the words together to mean something and then rearrange them to mean something else. He starts to string together a story, and his brothers are enticed to join the fun-- and even agree to do a little trading. The illustrations are fantastic and interact with the text in creative ways.
Max's Words, is an exciting and exhilarating book!

Young Max is on a desperate search for something to collect when he learns about his two brothers' stamp and coin collection. After trying to persuade each of them to give him a coin and a stamp, and being told no, Max decides that he is going to collect words. Leaving his brothers in shock, Max begins to cut small words, big words and unfamiliar words form magazines and newspapers. Pretty soon his collection begins to grow, and he discovers that his collection has more uses than either of his brothers'. He uses his words to start a thought, and then he decides that he wants to make a story to prove to his brothers' that his collection is better. Soon the two become interested in what show more Max is doing with his words and discover the importance and rewards that come with sharing. As well as,the importance of words. This book can be used as literacy development in all kinds of ways. One being, to learn how to write a story by putting words together that make since with one another. Lastly, it is a great book to use when it comes to developing student's vocabulary and word knowledge. show less
