Not much of a story -- really all counting, but what a glorious set of illustrations, and a lovely selection of primates. Yes, I read it for monkey storytime, but I appreciate the primate of it all. Just beautiful, and hey, evolution/we are all connected for little kids. ( ) 1, 2, 3, 4... I love the simple layout of the book; oversized numbers that correspond to stunning illustrations of various types of primates (1 gorilla, 2 orangutans etc.). There is an unexpected message at the end of the numbers, an illustration of the author and the words, "All primates. All one family. All my family..." and then on the following page it continues with, "and yours!" along with a two-page spread of various people, young and old, various skin/hair/eye colors, representing a cross-section of the human race. In the classroom, I would use this book during a study of animals or at the beginning of the year, in discussions of family/community. This is a beautifully illustrated counting book. The illustrations are a broad selection of primates with such excellent life like characteristics that really show the beauty of each primate. The illustrations seem to portray the primates feelings and emotions. Young children will enjoy learning about numeracy, while also building a larger vocabulary of primate species. no reviews | add a review
