Crime's an ugly constant in the big city. L.A. Chicago. New York. But when a savage murder brutalizes a small town and neighbor turns on neighbor, a tough-as-nails cop is essential to restoring order. Blood Land is a gritty, emotional saga set in the Wyoming badlands with both greed and vengeance at its core. When billions of dollars in natural gas rights hang in the balance and the town's top law officer's wife is slain by her own blood, a reluctant hero is forced to battle his own demons and ultimately choose between justice, revenge, and duty. In the tradition of Dennis Lehane, Tony Hillerman and James Lee Burke, Guthrie's sparse, haunting storytelling compliments his talent for creating richly-drawn, unflinching law officers with human frailties and a sense of justice.… (more)

It's a treat to find a solid and tough mystery with as fully realized a sense of place as Blood Land inhabits. The action is less about the characters than about the rugged Wyoming life they live. I read straight through this book in a few days. The writing is thoroughly skilled, from plotting to narrative to language. The story is fairly brief (just under 2oo pages), moving fairly directly through to its resolution, with the main plot, the backstory, and some character-building narrative seamlessly slotted together. I'm delighted to find a new author to follow.

That said I must confess I had my qualms when I saw that it was self-published at Smashwords, where I have rarely found anything that was even readable, much less good. For me that imprint means not only self-published--a convenience these days--but also self-edited, or rather, not at all edited. Not in this case; everything about this book from the quality of the writing to the details of the text is nothing short of completely professional. ( )

In Wind River, Wyoming Sheriff James Pruitt is called to a shooting to discover that his wife Bethy has been murdered at her parent’s family home by her brother Ty McIntyre.
The brother confesses, but are the facts really as they seem. ( )

Can't wait to read more about Sheriff Jack Pruett. Guthrie develops characters and story lines in a most engaging way. Having spent a lot of time in southern Wyoming Guthrie's description of the land, the people, and even the wind were true to my experiences. ( )

A good story featuring a Black sheriff in Wyoming and the Indians finally win. ( )

So many secrets! I was a little more than halfway through before I learned the sheriff's. A modern western, with pick-up trucks instead of horses. There were twits and turn and surprises with every turn of the page. The ending was a complete surprise. No one knows what lies within a persons heart until their life is on the line. ( )
