The author mines territory that Alan Furst has used for his novels: pre-World War II espionage centered France's defeat and what that implies for French physicists speculating on atomic research. Real life characters mix with fictional ones, and there are many bad guys. The author's language is intelligent and compelling, and her plotting complex and believable. She conveys a sense of place beautifully, and also the cynical quality of her characters. One quibble is that the book could use some tightening; it's a bit long and repetitive. Also the two most heroic characters lack a credible backstory. But fun and informative to read. ( ) too many characters made it more confusing than prior books by this author. also required looking up many historical and other facts. though doing this type of was helpful it took much time. it helped also that I was familiar with the many french words. I skipped some of the repetition in the book but finished it and still understood the plot. no reviews | add a review
