The Way to Glory

Class warfare is heating up in Cinnabar exacerbated by the actions of a ship commander who executed some crew for mutiny and who was then exonerated by the court martial held to look into the incident. Now Daniel Leary has been assigned to the man's ship and sent off to deal with pirates. The ship commander doesn't like Daniel at all either because he blames Daniel for actions of Daniel's father which caused the death of the commander's brother.

Meanwhile, factions are trying to recruit Adele Mundy for a conspiracy similar to the conspiracy that caused the deaths of the whole of Adele's family. But Adele's spymaster has a mission for her that can be accomplished by going along on Daniel's new mission.

Pirate hunting should be easy. But show more spies and the dastardly Alliance's plans to establish a base just where Daniel has been sent, means that Daniel and Adele are in the right location to foil their plans ... if they can get their suspicious commanding officers to pay attention to them.

The story was filled with action, politics, space battles, and other exciting things. I really like both Daniel Leary and Adele Mundy who, with very different personalities, make an amazing team fighting for Cinnabar's future.

The narration was well done. The world building was excellent. Fans of space opera will enjoy this series. show less

In this book, Daniel and Adele are back with the RCN but with political tensions rising in the streets of the capital, they are quickly sent off on a mission to an unreliable ally of Cinnabar in the depths of space and under the command of a captain who had been accused of unjustly executing the scion of a powerful senator. Out in the depths of beyond the couple find themselves involved with an attempted coup against the leader of their ally in what could be called a military ship, but not a regular warship, just a tender along with her six anti piracy cutters. Being Daniel and Adele, they manage to accomplish their jobs despite the blockages put in their way by uncooperative commanders and enemies who think they can beat the mighty show more RCN.

Unlike the books earlier in the series, this book does go into the politics on Cinnabar to a degree, at least and, as always, this is a rollicking tale when the action gets going. show less

... and I'm out. Just couldn't take all the chest thumping. This book has the dubious distinction of being abandoned. avoid it.

In which Lieutenant Daniel Leary and his crew are put under the command of a captain and an admiral who both dislike him strongly, but he manages to succeed nevertheless. The good news is that Leary is double-promoted to Commander at the end; the bad news is that Timothy Dorst is killed in action.

This is not my favourite of the series, but when reading it most recently I enjoyed it more than I expected to.
