Like Frog and Toad. Classically sweet life lessons without anvil-style teaching.
George and Martha: One Fine Day, by James Marshall. Houghton Mifflin, 1978.
George and Martha are hilarious and the characters become very rich and complete by the end of the book. The friendship is never laboured over or tested, but Martha’s challenges and enjoyments are thoroughly tested by George. George gets put down a notch but is right back at it in the next story. The five stories in the collection offer a bit of a learning curve – the last two actually working together. The darkness of the stories and the dangers are not taken seriously – either by the author or George, but there are clear and worthy values, mostly surrounding manners, and the world is a grown-up world, but of animals engaged in silliness.

George and Martha One Fine Day is a very cute story book. It has five different stories about two best friends. In each of the stories a lesson is shown, humor, friendship, and love. George is always trying to get Martha in one way or another. In the first story, she is tightroping and he is talking to her and scaring her, then he tries to read her dairy and tell her icky stories. This book almost shows to me how boys are goofy and always messing with girls, but in the end of this book Martha prevals and shows George not to mess with her. On wikipieda.com, it tells you about James Marshall's life and all the books he has written. This could be a good tool to use to help children get fimilar with his other writings.
The George and Martha series is a "love it or hate it" set of books. George and Martha are not always the nicest to each other and can in fact be a bit tricky, but they are good friends and all turns out well in the end.
Summary: This book is a series of short stories about two friends, George and Martha. It follows them as they play tricks on each other and learn to forgive each other.
Genre: Picture Book
Personal Reflection: I loved these books as a chiild myself and still really find something magical about them.

This book is actually made up of five short stories that all come together in the last story. The stories deal with manners and shows examples of bad manners followed by good manners. They all have elements of humor. This book is also available on tape.
Another adorable collection of stories about friendship, starring our favorite hippos.
