Complex and difficult

This is an amazing debut novel. Mr. Sveen has a gift for complex plotting in addition to his skills as a writer.

The setting is Norway, with a few scenes in England, Sweden and Germany. Tommy Bergmann is an Oslo detective investigating the skeletons of two women and a child found in 2003, buried in the forest. Clearly a homicide has occurred but when and why? A slightly implausible leap of logic sets him on the trail of the spies and the web of lies and deceit woven by a cell of Norwegian spies working against the Germans in WW2.

Tommy is an unhappy and dangerous man who is also a very very smart detective.

I love to read WWII stories, I think it's because my Dad was a GI in England during it and Mom is an English war bride. That being said, I've read nothing on the war in Norway so I looked forward to enhancing my knowledge although fictionally. This book is well written for a debut novel, but the plot is almost too complex and the characters are hard to connect with. I think that the Scandinavian names are difficult for Americans to keep straight and mentally pronounce, so as a novel in Norway, it is much easier for others to relate to them. At first the book is hard to get in to with the switching of time periods between the 1940's and 2000's, but then it gets easier, I always like this. Tommy Bergmann is a hard character to like, but show more he is a fabulous, determined detective and that adds to the epic plot twist in the end. I'd like to give it 3 1/2 stars and will be reading the next in the series. show less

In der Nordmarka werden drei Leichen gefunden, darunter ein kleines Mädchen. Die Gerichtsmedizin bestimmt den Todeszeitpunkt auf Anfang der 40er Jahre.
Dann wird der ehemalige Widerstandskämpfer Carl Oscar Krogh von seiner Haushälterin tot aufgefunden; er wurde brutal ermordet.
Der zuständige Kommissar ist Tommy Bergmann. Er sieht einen Zusammenhang zwischen diesen Fällen.
Wir erleben diese Geschichte wechselnd zwischen zwei Zeitebenen, einmal in den 40er Jahren und mal in der Gegenwart, die sich zum Ende treffen. Dieses Buch liest man nicht mal einfach so runter, es erfordert Aufmerksamkeit.
Bergmann ist ein guter Polizist. Er verbeißt sich in seine Fälle und gibt nicht auf. Aber auch er hat Schwächen. Manchmal wird er show more urplötzlich aggressiv. Das bekam auch seine Freundin Hege zu spüren und daher kam es zur Trennung.
Bergmann , der einen Zusammenhang zwischen den Fällen vermutet, macht diesen Fall zu seinem ganz besonderen Fall. Er gibt nicht auf, auch wenn er auf eine Mauer des Schweigens stößt. Doch dank seiner Hartnäckigkeit ergibt sich mit der Zeit ein Bild. Die Vergangenheit während des Krieges brachte Verrat und Misstrauen, aber auch eine tragische Liebesgeschichte.
Die Widerstandskämpferin Agnes Gerner ist eine interessante Persönlichkeit. Sie war mir sympathisch. Aber auch die anderen Figuren sind gut und glaubhaft geschildert.
Ich ahnte schon relativ früh, worauf es hinauslaufen würde. Dennoch tat das der Spannung keinen Abbruch, denn der historische Aspekt hat mich besonders interessiert.

Enkele weken nadat er in het bosrijke gebied rond Nordmarka drie oude skeletten werden gevonden, vermoedelijk uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, wordt de oude verzetsman Carl Oscar Krogh dood aangetroffen in zijn huis. Zijn lichaam is gruwelijk toegetakeld.
De Oslose inspecteur Tommy Bergmann en zijn team onderzoeken het verband tussen beide zaken. Ze ontdekken dat Krogh tijdens de oorlog de rechterhand was van de legendarische verzetsstrijder Kaj Holt. Hij was tevens een van de laatste personen die probeerde de toedracht van Holts mysterieuze dood in 1945 te achterhalen. Alle historische documentatie is echter spoorloos verdwenen.
