Cemetery Of Angels

OK, this was a creepy one, folks. And it got a little far out there. (Well, WAY far out there.) And, before it was done, it strayed into some territory that made me distinctly uncomfortable. But, by then, I had to know how it turned out so I kept reading into the wee hours of the morning despite my reservations. It is, after all, just a fictional story . . .

It starts with Rebecca running from a mysterious assailant near her home in Connecticut. Then she and her husband move to LA, into a creepy old house full of mysterious noises and smells and odd occurrences. The kids get an "imaginary playmate," then suddenly vanish.

Meanwhile, there is seriously odd crap going on in the adjacent cemetery.

Then it starts to get weird.

I'm not sure how show more to rate this. The actual writing is not stellar -- occasional odd/grammatically improper word choices and punctuation, some paragraphs where the lead sentence has little to do with the rest of the paragraph. Once, someone knocked on the door, thought about a bunch of stuff, and then walked up to the front door. (?) It's definitely not a literary masterpiece. But the STORY is a bit of a page-turner if you like horror / paranormal fiction.

I must say, the supernatural aspect got a little too far out there for me. It wound up not making a lot of sense, perhaps because it didn't fit my belief system -- even the theoretical, speculative edges of my beliefs, or even the level where I can "suspend disbelief." I think I got so wrapped up in the story more because I wanted to know how it turned out for the people involved -- I wanted to know if the missing kids would be OK, and I wanted to know what was up with the "stalker," who was a "real world" threat, not a paranormal one.

It's interesting to note that Hynd has written some Christian fiction books. Just to alert readers familiar with those works and looking for more of that variety: despite the reference to Angels in the title, this book is definitely NOT in that genre, and has content that, IMO, goes against the grain of even liberal Christian theology. show less

Terri (tymfos) noted this book on her library thing thread and it looked intriguing. I have the same reaction as she does, ie I'm really not sure what to make of this book or how to interpret it.

It is creepy, scary, way out there on the limb regarding paranormal events, at times frustrating and then again it hooked me until I had finish the last page.

I'm not sure if I can recommend the book. I can say it held my interest in a weird kind of way.

What a book!!!!!!!!! This has to be one of the creepiest ghost stories I've ever read. It is the kind of book that keeps you turning pages and not wanting the story to stop.

Bill & Becca Moore decide to leave Connecticut after Becca is the victim of an attempted murder. They pack up their two children and move to California, where they purchase a home which happens to have a cemetery behind it. Right away, strange things start happening...noises, smells, and the usual creepy occurrences in a house that is haunted. But the worst is yet to be...their two children disappear into thin air. The police are brought in and the investigation starts. However, the police have met their match in this one.

I don't want to give away even a single bit show more of the action, because if you are a ghost-story lover such as myself, you will not want to know the ending. Suffice it to say that it is a great one.

I would recommend this to any lover of ghost stories...it is not meant to be a work of literature, there is no "redeeming" message here, it is just sheer reading fun. show less
