Linsha Majere, daughter of Palin Majere and granddaughter of Caramon Majere, is operating undercover for the Knights of Solamnia's Clandestine Circle, under the pseudonym Lynn of Gateway. She is tasked by the Circle to obtain information about Sanction's governor, Lord Hogan Bight, and determine how his rule could be undermined. While having reservations about her mission, Lynn gets herself recruited onto Bight's Governor's Guard as a squire.
A ship from Palanthas crashes into Sanction Harbor, where it is discovered the crew has died of an unknown, contagious disease, which starts to spread through the lower city.
As Linsha undergoes training as a squire and performs missions for Lord Bight, including accompanying him to a meeting with show more the dragon overlord Onysablet, it is discovered the disease is of magical origin and the work of the Knights of Takhisis, who intend to use the plague and the imminent eruption of Mount Thunderhorn as a distraction for an assault on the harbor.
