Seven Touches of Music

Description
This experimental mosaic novel by a Serbian author - who is often compared to such luminaries as Italo Calvino, Franz Kafka, and Jorge Luis Borges - consists of seven wispily-connected stories about unexpected encounters with music. A teacher of autistic students, a librarian, the purchaser of a music box, an elderly woman at a train station, a scientist-turned-painter, a dying professor, and a violin-maker's apprentice seem deceptively ordinary until sudden shifts in time or place thrust show more them into a realm where all the conventional ways of appreciating music seem not to apply. show lessTags

I am not normally a short story reader, but this book held my interest throughout. There are seven stories with a common motif of music. These are not connected stories and each one can stand on its own. Each story unfolds an aspect of life which progresses to a point. But the story may roll back or open to another unexpected fold. When the story rolls back, you wonder why there is no real denouement, but you still appreciate the glimpse into that alternate crevice of life. If the story unfolds further, you are left with a surprise, but not the gratuitous misfortune of an O'Henry story.

The Serbian author Zoran Zivkovic... already has many passionate supporters in America, and though it is too soon to crown him the new Borges, Seven Touches of Music makes him a leading candidate for the position.
