Esqueça os animais fofinhos. Muito da obra da cartunista e escritora Lisa Hanawalt é baseada em animais antropoformizados: cabeças de gatos, corujas, lagartos, aves, cães e cavalos em corpos humanos. Muitos cavalos e cachorros! Não por acaso, a artista é produtora de "BoJack Horseman", a série de animação que mostra uma cáustica visão do mundo das celebridades.
E sátira e crítica social estão presentes em todas as páginas de "My dirty duma eyes", livro que reúne cartoons, quadrinhos, ilustrações e textos de Lisa. Nada escapa à sua visão crítica, de artistas da cultura pop, a moda, chefs de cozinha, reality shows, a cultura ao automóvel e até uma feira comercial de brinquedos.
Lisa também coloca seu traço colorido, show more irreverente e muitas vezes surrealista em críticas em texto e ilustrações que faz de filmes como "Planeta dos macacos", "Drive" ou "Cavalo de guerra". Há muito da vida da própria artista na obra, que não esconde do leitor várias passagens autobiográficas, algumas bastante íntimas.
A autora gosta muito de animais e chegou a declarar em uma entrevista que "eles já estão no nosso status", e que quando está com o olhar perdido "provavelmente estou pensando em cavalos ou cachorros". If Lisa Hanawalt's artwork doesn't end up in a museum someday I'm gonna come back as a ghost and haunt the MET and Louvre until the make a Hanawalt exhibition. Her work is so unique and colorful that I can't help but love it.
I've never seen the 3 movies she has longer essays about in here (Planet of the Apes, Drive, and Warhorse) so I felt a bit disconnected from those pieces, but the rest was super fun to read! Her short comics especially are always good for a laugh. :)

Lisa Hanawalt takes twenty-something oversharing and makes out of it not a twee indie work as you might expect, but an exuberantly crude farce, a combination of the comedic sensibilities of Bocaccio and Louis C.K. This book can be browsed for lovely illustrations, studied for pop culture references, or just LOLed at for the seriously funny ideas.

I loved Hanawalt's Coyote Doggirl but hated Hot Dog Taste Test. Time for a tie breaker.

Like Hot Dog Taste Test this is mostly a collection of short humor pieces obsessed with the absurd, genitals and poop. And there are reviews of some real middling movies, a toy fair, and "The Bachelor" season 16. The reviews aren't particularly good, but at least they mean less room for the nonsensical junk. Bonus star!

Enjoy the aesthetic of Bojack Horseman (and would blend it with David Lynch maybe?)
Would enjoy the aesthetic of pre-1982 DEVO but with walking animals

I think you'd enjoy this. I think it's mostly because I've been saturated with the themes over my life and I'm not in the time of my life where I want to be anymore. I can see a time where I might have been really into this. It's good for people who are right in the midst of their glorious anxiety-induced future-questioning affluent naturalized city life.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Overall, it was entertaining and the drawings were great, if but a bit unsettling. Sometimes unsettling in a cool way like the pilot who had birds and worms coming out of all orifices. Strange, but cool. Some parts were hilarious and others just meh. This book is definitely not for everyone but I could see how others might really enjoy it.

Not really a graphic novel; more like graphic short stories. My favorite was the review of The Bachelor. I would definitely read more of her stuff.
