Another entry in my nostalgic journey through the sci-fi of my youth (apparently first published the year I was born: 1960), this collection provided some enjoyable trips into the decidedly quirky world of Sturgeon's everyday people responding to forces beyond their/our imagining (but not Sturgeon's). "Need" offered some interesting reflections on the difference between need and want, why we need people to need us, etc. and made me aware of the influence Sturgeon may have had on Stephen King. Another bulldozer story ("Abreaction")--was Ted a bulldozer operator at some point in his life?--I liked this one better than his more famous bulldozer story, "Killdozer." And you've probably heard that the cockroaches will probably inherit the show more earth when the light of humanity has dimmed...but otters? ("Like Young")... show less
Loved it as I do most TS. Everyday people encountering extraordinary in the ordinary. His writing is pure joy to read.

Theodore Sturgeon was born Edward Hamilton Waldo in New York City on February 26, 1918. He sold his first short story, Heavy Insurance, while serving in the United States Merchant Marine from 1935 to 1938. He won numerous awards including the 1954 International Fantasy Award for More than Human, the 1970 Nebula and Hugo Awards for Slow Sculpture, show more and the 1985 World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement. He was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2000. He died of pneumonia in Eugene, Oregon on May 8, 1985.
